That's pretty brave of you Skagit, you're a tad bit closer than I would comfortably be. Those are Rattlesnakes eh?

Haha! I wouldn't assume one way or the other however I'm thinking they were, even tho they didn't rattle. We have rubber boas (not them), rat snakes(I've only seen the rat snake bodies slithering by), night snakes(not one of those) and def not western garter snakes so that leaves rattlesnakes. The head and colouring are in accordance with a rattler but I wasn't getting close enough to see the vertical pupils. Hehe, still, pretty cool, though brrrr having just walked by (on only path to kamloops lake @ tranquille creek) with my gf and dog. *shivers*

Edit: perhaps they could have been gopher snakes? Up the creek I found a dead one last year that was nearly thick as my forearm - I couldn't count all the rattles (was partially under a set of roots) but stopped at 16!

Thanks for confirming, Zap! I believe there are three but can't see it's head (too bad coz the black and white colouring is awesome). :)

Haha! Great stuff, thanks! They really are beauties, then! I didn't know that about the black and white tails. My first thought was hoping somebody doesn't kill them in fear but darned if I was gonna move them.   :D

As a follow-up, when we got into town I flagged one of the city by-law guys down I've spoken with in the past. Though it's not his duty, he made a point to go see if the rattlesnakes needed relocating due to people and pets who could unknowingly be at risk. Last thing I wanna hear about is someone or their pet being in the news so - kudos to that by-law guy! (Did I really just say that about by-law? Lol yup)
