Been reading these posts & info came in handy when talking to a man today.
Actually seen a car parked on a side road off of Railway Ave here in Richmond so I rode my bike over & offered the man & his family a Chinese tract. ( doing some fishing for The Lord ) he said "no" ( boo ...no problem rode many KMs & most did take one "cheer" )

He had a map book & he was trying to figure out how to get to Steveston Village as he wanted to buy salmon off the docks.
So gave him all the info & as he looked like a good " talker type " suggested if he were to buy 2-3 or more fish he should try to get them for $15 each.
He thought salmon sold by the lb but as far as I know it sells by the fish & not by weight.
Off he went.

This morning $5.00 per pound at the main dock. Only 2-3 ships are selling.

Save-On and Superstore have been selling fresh silver bright sockeye (look like Georgia Strait seine, no gill net marks), cleaned and head off, for $11-13/fish all long weekend. We've eaten 3 so far and they are fresh and tasty. They beat the coloured up gill-netted ones I saw at Steveston wharf last week for $15-20/fish.

StillAqua,
Which towns are you referring to for Save On and Superstore?

I prefer smaller 3-5 pound sockeye , they are tasty ! I picked up 20 of them chromers (average 13$ a peice) from the grandview highway superstore on Saturday .
8.55$ a kilo is a deal ! Plus I got a friend who got me 10% off since he works there , and spend 250$ and get 25,000pc plus points (25$) deal is on too .

Yesterday night and today I went to north shore , marine drive SS , they had sockeye that were coloured up , which I would not eat .
Seems as though the late run summers colour up even when they hit the mouth of fraser
I've also noticed this in previous years

It's a great deal for quality sockeye......we ate 6 fresh this weekend just simply BBQ'd and I think the family could keep going.

Two questions

What does it mean when you say a fish is "colored up"

And two am I reading correct that there is another commercial opening tomorrow?

When I worked at the fish cannery during my university days, all the sockeyes from the Fraser were turning colour but the meat is still nice and firm and red.

Two questions

What does it mean when you say a fish is "colored up"

It just means it's been in or near freshwater for a while and has started to develop spawning colours, stopped feeding and is using up the fat stored in the flesh for energy. It's a leaner fish than a chromer. Personally, I've found the silver seine-caught sockeye are the best eating. Nothing wrong with a little colour, you're just getting closer to the best before date.
