Has the tailings pond spill changed your outlook on Sockeye?
« on: August 05, 2014, 08:01:36 AM »

For those of you who might venture out to fish for Sockeye in the Fraser - has the recent tailings pond dam failure & spill up in Likely changed your outlook in this regard or?

There are some huge decisions to be made regarding fishing the Horsefly and Mitchell River stocks presently in the Fraser and entering daily ... should they be fished hard, in the thought they will die when they reach the Quesnel River, or should all harvesting be curtailed in the hopes some fish will make it through to spawn?

With the huge pressure already in place to harvest sockeye this year I think I answered my question.

Watching the news last night, they did say it was largely contained in another pond.  Until they do some more testing, nobody knows for sure what effect it will ultimately have on the Fraser.

Watching the footage I don't think 'containment' is a word they should be using lightly, if at all. This can't be covered up or denied and action is needed not political posturing. This will affect us all in a variety of ways, not just sockeye fishing. I won't be flossing, but that hasn't changed in 10 years, so has nothing to do with this toxic mess.

This article has the waste put into pond last year alone...

The 'pond' is 4kmx4km and they say it is under control however it looks like the 'pond' is empty now, hence the control? If there's anything we can do as a community, please let me know.

Yeah, the other "Pond" they are referring to is Quesnel Lake (and Polley Lake) - the deepest lake in BC and the largest Fjord lake in the world.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

Disgusting and really shows you the priorities of the people in government - siding with the big company and ignoring everybody else.  Empty enforcement and empty promises is all their good at.It's very disheartening.

The sportfishing community should really get their act together and work on putting together ONE BIG lobby to work the government more effectively. If they/we dont well all just keep being ignored.

News conference with Imperial Mines President and BC's Environment Minister begins at 3pm on CKNW.

Let's see how they plan to handle this mess.

Side note: Imperial Metals share price is down over 40% since the incident.

A wise and appropriate response by Linda and DFO, imo.  The next few days are going to be very interesting for people and fish in that area, and downstream, as this has the potential to be really bad.

Dave, you're still heading up that way this fall? Don't worry, the water is almost drinkable. Phew... ;)

Right ...  not sure if we will go now; might be the first time I have missed fishing my favorite river, the Horsefly, in over 25 years.

So unfortunate, just when I was about to explore it after our conversation.
