Leaders for Springs
« on: June 29, 2004, 02:03:25 PM »

what brand and pound line works the best?
Has anyone tried spider wire? The price is the same for spiderwire and Maxima Ultra Green but the diameter is much smaller than Maxima.
How abrasion resistant is spiderwire? Also, what is a safe main line to go with?

thanks for any advice

i think that a safe main line is probably maxima chamileon or ultra green 20 pound.
An then you can go with spiderwire for leader 15 pound. works well for me 20pound main and 15 leader. :) :)

Yeah, normfish is right ;D if you try to horse your fish in you won't have a great success rate of landing fish, especially the big ones.

I have always used what normfish suggested, I am using a braided line now for my fraser rigs...15 ultragreen is still my leader

That might be the case for Springs in the Fraser via the "dental techniques", but in the Vedder with short float I think is what would be useful info.

p.s. 4/0???  Can you really float a gaff hook? :D

I personally use 2/0 or 1/0 for springs and socks in the Fraser with great success. For leader I stick with 15 - 20 for socks and 20-25 for springs. Always Maxima!

Doctor sound like your fishing for sturgeon. 8/0 hook sounds a little big. Only time I would use a 8/0 hook for springs is on k-16 kwickfish for springs on the skeena which run on average 30 pounds. I find 6/0 no barb gami is best for plunking glos.

I use 20 lb maxima ultragreen for main and 12 lb maxima ultrgreen for the leader when I'm fishing the vedder for the vedder for springs.  And when I fish the fraser for springs I use 20 lb maxima ultragreen for main and 15 lb maxima ultragreen for leader.

Spring_killer, I use #1 gamakatsu hooks for springs and sometimes #2 but number #2 gamakatsu hooks might be too small.

For the Fraser or the Vedder? I think that 2/0 would be two small for the Fraser.
