Im sure this has been covered a whole bunch of times, but I'm too lazy to dig through all the posts.

I'm looking to do some crabbing in the next little bit, I've never been and I don't know too much about the whole rigging of the traps and what not. I'm probably just going to pick up a couple of the cheap butterfly style traps or ring traps for now.

I was going over the regs and it says "All traps for crab, shrimp or prawn fishing must be marked with a floating tag or buoy bearing the fisher’s name, including traps tied to a vessel or dock or fished from shore." Im just wondering how to rig the bouy to my trap. Maybe someone can do up a little diagram up for me or something. Also, I'll be fishing from a wharf if that makes any difference.

Just tie a milk jug on the end of the rope with your name and number on it.
Regardless if its unattended or not you will be covered.

Teach yourself to tie a bowline. One of if not THE most versatile knot there is.

Sorry but isn't there enough plastic in the water now? Keep the f'g milk jugs at home in the recycling and get a proper float.

The jug isn't even in the water.
No need for a proper float if its just going to be sitting tied to a dock.
Not only that but that will be one less "proper float" that will eventually end up choking a Whale or something.

Yep - taking Belcarra as an example I have never seen the hordes crabbing from the dock using floats or the like.  Its not really necessary so long as you have your rope secured to something on the dock.

I too use the open ringed butterfly-style traps from shore. I don't think there's any need to fix a buoy on them as long as they are secured to something on shore.

I do think it is required that you identify your trap somehow.
Unless im reading the regs. incorrectly.
