So finally after careful considering I decided to go for a plunge and buy cp 3113 mb. This rod seems to be most versatile (can handle steelhead as well as some spring) and there appear to be deals on them on the Craigs list there.
Now ,is there difference in technology between older and more recent blanks and if so when it got changed.
I was also considering G-loomis glx however it is a lighter rod with softer action. Is there any other alternative to the Sage that is better ?  Currently I own Amundson 2116 which I like . It is light rod that helped me to pull steelhead (my first one ) this year. I realise though that ,if I get bigger one let say 15 and up pounder ,I'll be in for long battle hence the need for more backbone .
I'll apreciate all information on this subject.

You can not go wrong with either brown or green Sage 3113MB I have both of them. I got my  first  brown Sage blank  rod 3113MB being built Brian Babock about 26 years ago......zero problems. Caught lots of big springs 30 lbs plus, some real big bright silver chums and couple of 20lbs plus steelheads with it. I find the 311MB is sure a dandy CP rod with it moderate action.

If you can find 3113LB it sure a nice CP rod too. Just my 2 cent opinion.

You might be able to getaway using a 3113LB for chinooks but I wouldn't pressure them like I would using the M/MB. I used the Sage 3106LB for coho and steelhead and the 3113M for chum and chinooks and had the 3113LB blank for over a year and half before it was finally built and so far I find it hard to use anything else. I do enjoy using my 13' GLX during low/clear water condition but only for coho, sockeye, pink and steelhead. You'd be crazy to use the GLX for chum or chinooks!

I've got a green 3113MB and I LOVE IT.  Great all around rod until you really want to start specializing with types of rods with certain species. landed my first 4 steel heads this year and then bought a 3113LB Brown blank to see how it would handle some steel.  And I got SPANKED!! I landed a nice 15/16 lber(I can't believe it stayed on with 4 full out air jumps and 6 hectic peels but got it to hand but the next 4 shook off the hook.  I find it a bit too light and a bit lower on the recovery with the crazy head shakes on a more aggressive steel head. I've traded the LB for the GLX after 3 months but i broke my GLX on the first hook set.  Bad luck I'd say.  I've got a new one coming in and plan on building a reel seat with new guides.  So, I can't tell you how well the GLX handles yet.

What about rainshadow or talon rods ?
Does anybody has experience with them?
Steel_Mo_Heads, reason I'm looking for more versatile rod is I don't have enough time on the river to justify
thousands of dollars in specialized gear. However I'd like to have one or two really nice rods and reels.
I was looking at GLX at Fred's store and sales guy told me you can handle pretty big fish with it ,but ... it will take time to land it. That disqualifies it for me because for one fish might be tired beyond recovery point at the end. When you get wild steely then ....

Go with the 3113MB if you want a great all around rod. I owned 2 in the past and fish from 8lbs through to 40+ lb springs it handled them all, all were fun to play.


I hardly used my pin setups which is why I sold them however now with my boys getting older I'll find myself with a gear rod in my hands more often so it's time again to grab a pin reel.............and probably just use my switch rod with it

Check out the Lamiglass 3113 BC Series its a great rod too & half the price, but if your going with the sage I'd Stick with the "M" instead of the "L" unless you stay in slower water most of the time. If you get a big fish in a swift current & want to move him you'll be wishing you had got the "M". I have the Sage in 2106L 4106LL, 3113L, & 3113M, my go to rod I always take out is the 3113M. One thing I've noticed (maybe others have too) is I get a much more solid hookset with "M" over the "L", especially times when I'm just checking to see if that bump was a fish. If I do that with the "L" I always seem to lose them right away. I will say that the "L" series are much more sensitive and you can really feel your presentation more, but I can feel a fish bumping my bait with the "M" and most times get them on before the bobber drowns. One last thing to note is my landing ratio went way up using the 3113M.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Totally agree with everything he said. I lost a lot of coho with my old 2106L because I couldn't get enough stick on the hook set on medium to long drifts. If I was close quarters fishing then it was a great rod

  It is just personal preference. I can see advantage of using 3113Mb when you are using 12-15# leader. But if you are using 8-10# I think 3113 LB provides more options to land fish. If I am using 6-8# - 4106llb is my to go rod.  I use my MB just once last year to test rod/reel balance and maybe 2-3 times previous one.

  This is why my friend switch to 13' IMX  . Didn't see him having any hookset issues last coho season.

What about Batson Rainshadow XST 1383 F centerpin?
Does anybody have experience with it?
