Boaters card for an electric motor?
« on: May 25, 2015, 11:00:08 PM »

I was told today that you need a boaters card even for a electric trolling motor.  I looked online and this seems to be the truth.

Wondering who has been checked with just an electric motor in our local lakes.

Also,  how hard is the test. I have done the practice test and scored a 90.  What's the passing grade?

Yes, to pilot any motorized craft you need a Pleasure Craft Operator's Card. Note that you need your PCOC even if the motor is off and you are paddling.
The test is not difficult. 80% is the passing grade.
I have never been checked.

I see that a few online sites exist for this sort of stuff (test taking).

Does anyone know if they are all legit and of so which one do you use

If you go to transport Canada, they have links to accredited classes...

$10 friends and family discount coupon "VIP Code" is R9QB62 - they stuck a dozen coupons in with my card I just received - all had the same code on them, so all that wanna use it - go for it!

They were checking heavily at Buntzen the other day. everyone I know has been running a boat since we were kids and now I need a license...Seems like another government money grab to me.

Funny thing is that I can probably paddle faster than my trolling motor pushes the boat... probably the same chances of stuff going wrong..

at the same time its the law and nothing is going to change

Because having to spend $50 and 6 hours of your time to be able to drive a boat is totally killing the fun you can have in life.

By including small electrics they made it a money grab.

Take the exam. It's common sense but you might be surprised in what you've forgotten or neglected over the years.

Its a one time deal and you might actually learn something.
My experience with it was a bit different than most im sure.
The system was down and it wouldn't let me re write the test and after a couple days and phone calls ,the lady just said,"congratulations you just passed the boaters exam" LOL!

It's easy to get the card, just do it and then your covered. I plan to have my kids get theirs so they too can drive the boat. My oldest is 6 and I plan to let him start learning to use the electric on our next trip to the lake  :D
