Does anyone know if herring have been confirmed this far in?

I was at the park today, and watched from the pier for at least fifteen minutes as one school of young (2-3 inch long) fish streamed by. Silver in colour when they turned, otherwise dar. Conservatively, i would guestimate there to have been somewhere between 40 and 60 thousand fish in this school. I have never seen a school of fish this large, or long before.

Herring are the only fish i could guess at it being, judging from their numbers. Unless someone else knows what else it could have been?

There are a lot of anchovies around at this time of the year, I've seen a lot at white rock the past couple weeks.
Could be those

That would be cool if it was Anchovy.
There used to be lots of them back in the day until they were commercially wiped out.

Any parr markings (may be tough to observe from above)? Could be salmon smolts...but I'm thinking juvenile herring or sandlance as well.

All i could see from the pier is that they were dark on the back, and flashed when they turned sideways (as most fish do). And that there were untold thousands upon thousands of them.

Eitherway, it was nice to see so much life returning to the inner inlet.

I highly doubt you would find schools of salmon smolts that large.
Judging by the numbers and appearance descriptions, I'm putting my money on juvenile anchovies.
Drag a herring jig through the schools and you might catch a few, they are actually quite tasty
