Rolling fish
« on: August 06, 2015, 12:40:16 PM »

On Saturday morning I took my wife out fishing on the Vedder and we found a trough with a school of 8 or 10 reasonable sized fish holding in it.  While I was trying to figure out what they were we saw a couple of them rolling and I assumed that meant they were salmon.  Am I wrong?  Do other species roll?

Aside from all 5 species of Pacific Salmon that roll I have seen Bull Trout, resident Rainbows, Steelhead, and Mountain Whitefish rolling on the Vedder.
This time of year they are likely Sockeye, but could be red chinooks.

They were most likely sockeye as typhoon mentioned. The sockeye roll everywhere when they're in the Vedder. I've only seen a handful of springs roll this year and when they do, it's easy to tell that it's a spring due to the larger size.

Thanks!  Sockeye would make sense.  They were completely unwilling to bite anything, at the time I just chalked it up to the temperature.

Sockeye are quite willing biters in clear water.
Probably best to leave them be in this warm weather.

Also there is no retention of Sockeye and that includes the clipped ones you may find on the Veddar.
