To early for fraser river pinks ????
« on: August 12, 2015, 02:42:13 AM »

Hello Everybody, I am very exited for this upcoming pink salmon year. I was wondering does anybody think its worth it to try for some pinks at saperton landing  either this week or the week after.

I caught a Pink in Richmond August 17th two years ago.
First pink showed up in the Albion test nets August 7th so it is definitely possible.
I haven't heard of any caught in the Fraser yet but I also haven't fished it.

It's a little early, they've only showed 3 pinks at Albion. I know new west is lower down the river, but give it a week or two still. So to answer your question, maybe the end of next week you might see a few.

Still too early. Odds would be pretty slim but if you're close by or have extra time why not try it.

The pinks will be running up the Fraser in much better (fishable) numbers by the tail-end of August. Usually the last week of August is a pretty good bet. Although some fish are caught between now and then, they are still very few and far between. But as a previous poster mentioned, if you're close enough, why not try it? There will still be the odd fish around and you may be lucky enough to catch it. :D I have caught pinks on the Fraser starting around the 18th-20th, so it is surely possible. If you go, let us know how you do!

My earliest pink salmone encounter was also August 17th, around ten years ago. A small school went by that day and I just happened to spot it when I drove by. Other than that exception, they always come into the river in massive numbers around the last week or August or early September. From the reports I've gotten, they are holding in big schools at the mouth right now, so who knows, maybe all of a sudden they'll come in a bit earlier with a favourable tide.

Fish have been caught early in other systems this year. I'll bet they will be early in the fraser. Best bet is to give it a try.

Taking the boat out to the mouth would be fun pink mania.
Has anyone tried out on the mouth ?

One other thing to consider is the aboriginal openings. I am generally a mid Fraser pink fisher so last season it was very hard to get out when there was a window whereas they had a chance to get into the river in decent numbers and provide an opportunity in this area.
A number of general commercial openings also prevented any kind of consistency. These are a couple of important factors in deciding when to spent some time on the water for a better chance.

I've done it in the past, it's not even fun, it's so much work. You can't even get your line in the water without having to bring it right in.
