If you have a light 6'6 rod and know how to use it you can cast as far as you need (halfway across any given tributary of the Fraser) just fine and you'll get a better fight out of a pink than with a big ol' river rod.

Agree 100%.  One of my favorite setups is a 6ft outfit rated 10lb test with a little stiffness so it can cast spoons nicely.   It was an inexpensive Quantum outfit my Dad bought for me as a Birthday Present from Canadian tire - used if for years for trout and pinks and it casts beautifully.

No? ;)

For pink salmon in the Tidal Fraser River, 8 or 9' are my personal preference. While I can cast pretty far with a 6' setup too, 8' or 9' just works better for casting, playing the fish, landing the fish.

From my dozens of rods, yes plenty of 6'6 rods, most for the kids some for twitching jigs, my favourite set-up for casting to pinks (and coho) is a Medium fast 8'6" 4-10lb rod with a 2000 reel. The noodle tip on a fast action rod makes for a wild ride.
Same reason we like our fly rods, long, fast action.

Go to Berry's and buy one of there pink salmon fishing rods, they have been well thought out, by professionals.
they come in price ranges starting at $69. These rods were put together just for pink fishing.

I bought 2 more as spare coho rods in the boat, my buddies hate there "Canadian tire trout rods" after they use mine.

The 20lb braid just makes it multi purpose, like I said before, it's the same rod and reel I use for casting to coho in frog water.

I don't use braid for coho , I have my cp with 15lb mono , or my baitcaster with 15 lb mono , my leaders are 8 lbs . I use braid only for sturgeon , or casting spoons on my spinning set-up and I tie 4 to 8lbs mono(about 3 feet)  to my 10lbs braid

Ya you got me, it's been fun

Night,night

Oh, hey! Hit me up mid. Oct. when all the pink madness is over.
First light coho, mid morning chum on the pin then afternoon sturgeon till your arms fall off. On me, for real.

My favourite pink/coho setup is 8'6" 6-12lb Med-fast with 2500 reel spooled with 8lb 0.010mm mono, casts a mile and I am very happy with it, have handled chums as well :D
I gave some thought of switching to braid for better hooksets and sensitivity but was told that braid would cut trough the porcelain guides over time. Anyone had a similar experience before?
