I have an aluminum boat that has timed out and is to be replaced.  I wan't to see about getting a few bucks out of it as it goes bye bye.  Anyone have a positive experience with scrapping an aluminum boat in the LM?

In case anyone is wondering, its a 15' Gregor. I'm also considering scrapping the second one, a 14' Springbok.

Are they in such bad shape you couldn't sell them to someone too poor to buy new?  If they are that bad off, any metal recycler should take it, probably pay you by the pound.  It's not as valuable as copper, so not sure how much you would get. Maybe $0.50/pound?  Whatever the price, you will get more if you remove any styrofoam and steel and any other material that would lower the value to the scrapyard.

Good luck finding a scrap yard right now that is paying over 4 cents per pound for metal. You might get a bit more because it is aluminum, but no one is going to give you even close to 50 cents a pound.

If the Springbok is a deep V , I wouldn't mind having a look at it . Sandman's reply is bang on , around 50 t0 60 cents per pound . The scrap has to be all aluminum or the price per lb. goes down . Scrap dealers everywhere , if you are in the Surrey area try the scrap yard on King George by the Bridge across from the Chevron , used to be Felix . Decent prices and they are used to bulky items . Not sure how the PM feature works but PM me if you know how .

The Springbok is not a deep vee, its more of a cartopper with a flat bottom and relatively no dead rise.  I'm in Cloverdale so those places are pretty close compared to the ones I know in the LM.  That's good advise about getting all of the foam and crap out of the boat to get the best price.  Boats are being stripped of pretty much everything we can unbolt.

A quick search of Canada scrap metal prices shows that 50 cents per pound is pretty close for aluminum.

Talked to our scrap dealer he said they are trading at 40 to 50 cents per lb. depending on grade , basically that means .50 cents for 1/4" plate prime then the scale goes down from there . Keep in mind he is a wholesaler , so don't be too insulted if they only offer you 30 cents a pound , still surprised that no young bucks on the forum didn't jump at the opportunity for a fixer upper boat . And yeah, steel is at  $60 a ton or .03 cents per pound , completely tanked , was at $ 200 a ton same time last year . If you are in Cloverdale try Macs Traders on Fraser Highway , they will pay less but you might make that up in gas .

Thanks guys!  I've stacked the boats on a trailer and we'll be bringing them back in a few weeks.  Should get a few strange looks with two stacked boats on a trailer.

I'm hoping for enough money to pay the ferry fares since they are absolutely killing me for the over-length.

Don't believe the scrap yard guys, they are just chimps like me and don't know what they are talking about.   Robert knows everything and is very frustrated about having to live amongst the rest of us morons.

Don't expect $.50 per pound. I scrapped an old 12 foot  2 weeks ago. It did still have  the wooden seats and transom and a 45 year old drowned 7.5 hp motor thrown in, but they took off 60 lbs for waste and still only paid  $.20 per pound for the remainder.  $30.80 total.  She first typed in 10 cents per pound but eventually raised it to 20.  Like Sandman said, they will ding you big time for "contaminants".
This was at Goodeys in Chilliwack.
 Two years ago we salvaged a ruined 12 footer and only got $40 and it was all aluminum.

Don't forget...  Scrap guys at the yard are notoriously "honest"....  Watch the scale if you can and have an idea of what the weight is before you go... And be very friendly and likable.

A brand new boat might be high grade aluminum but old one with rock,  molds,  fungus,  oil,  who knows what it covered in or wedged into it....  Are rivets and welds even aluminum...

Unless they are COMPLETELY eff'd up.  They will be worth more to someone who needs one for still water fishing.  To leave in the bush at his/her cabin etc...

Ive seen some pretty beat up boats floating around, with happy and safe owners.  Some also used by duck hunters, or deer hunters who travel deep into the bush which can really beat the snot out of aluminum boats.

Heck, if Flexseal^R can make a Chevy S10 float...
