Was fishing in Maple ridge area last evening when a guy came around selling sockeye and pinks.  There were quite a few people fishing and one guy agreed to buy some so the sellers came around with a boat filled with fish.  When this happened a gentlemen who was also fishing there approached the boat and demanded they throw all the salmon they had overboard.  The guy was a police officer who just happened to be fishing.  Loved it.

I hope it gets investigated more, once that cop is on duty.

Lol that reminds me of a story when I was a teen. I was fishing for springs up north and noticed a CO fishing in plain clothes. I recognized him from when he checked my licence just the week before. Anyways I told my friend this who was fishing next to me. About fifteen minutes later a kid a few years younger than me asked my friend if he wanted to buy his spring he caught for ten bucks. He wanted money to buy a pack of smokes lol. My buddy who can be an funny dude said try that guy while pointing to the CO!! Needless to say the kid went up to the undercover CO and made the offer. The CO then went and opened his wallet and showed his badge. The kid lost his fishing rod, tackle and waders!! You never know who you are fishing next to.

Harsh lesson.  Bet he never forgot.

I assume that these sellers may have been First Nation people?
I also assume that they may be permitted to sell a portion of their allowable catch?

Is it wrong to assume they are doing nothing wrong?

I am surprised however that a police officer, who is acting alone and may not be trained in current fishery regulations, has the legal authority to enforce such an order upon these sellers.

Any "Peace Officer" can enforce the Fisheries Act and any number of other laws. But he/she does have to certain that he is in fact interpreting correctly a law he may not be entirely familiar with.

Good and bad. The unfortunate side of it, is that if all that fish was thrown overboard like they were told to do.....we all know that they're going to go straight back out and catch another boat load of more fish. Which sucks because it's now double the amount of fish pulled out of the river....wish it was more of a serious consequence...

retention at this time.

It is true....I was there.  The off duty officer told them to dump all their Sockeye and Pinks, which they did!
