Custom sink tips for 8wt spey
« on: September 10, 2015, 02:45:26 PM »

Hey All,

Does anyone have experience making their own sink tips?  I'm thinking of trying to make a few up for my 13'3" 8wt two hander running a 550g Vision Ace Skagit.  Manufacturer ships a 12.5ft t-14 head (175 grains).  Currently i just have two sink tips, one 10' t-8 (80 grains) and one 10' t-14 (140 grains)  I just read this article which was pretty informative and made me think the t-8 was light:

http://www.steelheadbum.com/store/pc/viewcontent.asp?idpage=103

This was their recommendation for a 7wt 13'3

Most used sink-tip:

12’ of Rio T-11 (132 grains) or Airflo CCT200 (120 grains)

Other sink-tips:

12’ of Rio #10 weight Type 3 (103 grains)

12’ of Rio #10 weight Type 6 (103 grains)

7’ of Rio T-14 with a 2 ½ (6/7/8) Rio Skagit Cheater (132 grains total)

Has anyone done this themselves?  And if so, might you still have some extra materials lying around?   ;)

I myself prefer 12' tips with my 13'3" rod, any shorter and I tend to blow my anchor a lot especially fishing light tips or unweighted flies which do help in aiding your anchor to stick.

Approximate sink rates for Tungsten sink tips

T8 - 6.5 ips
T11 - 7.5 ips
T14 - 8.5 ips
T17 - 10 ips
T20 - drops like a marble LoL
