SPRINGS- where does the name come from?
« on: July 15, 2004, 09:44:50 AM »

Hi All, decided to stop sitting on the sidlines and get in the game.Have been a regular follower of the board for a couple of years.have read some great stuff and even feel like I know some of the regulars.
Well I thought I would start a new thread.More to gain enlightenment than to foster controversy.Would any of the more sage among you care to educate me on the origins of the name SPRINGS for our beloved and revered Chinooks? I already Know about Kings,Tyees, but springs seems peculiar to B.C. and must have some interesting history behind it.Look forward to reading what you might have to say on the matter.

I believe that it has to do with the timing of the first runs of chinooks showing up ie in the spring time.

FA is bang on. I'm not sure but I believe it originated with the commercial guys way back. The springers(first arrivals) were highly regarded for their red tasty meat. These high fat content fish were more valuable than the summer/fall stocks hence the different nickname.

Ive been trying to get Pendlington to do a show with me, you know a comeback special. Still live at the Dump(watch out for that hoooooooole!) Sportfishing BC says there is enough clowns on the air what with Henry & Italo, so its back to male prostitution for this clown.

Chinook are sometimes called "spring salmon", because they return to some rivers earlier than other Pacific species.

I got that from http://www.greatcanadianrivers.com/salmon/species-families-chinook.html
