Another assault on the Chilliwack River Valley
« on: December 22, 2015, 06:50:26 AM »

Posting these up for Chris as it is just being circulated by email this morning:

Quote
Hi:

I just got word today of yet ANOTHER TOXIC asbestos dump in the Chilliwack River Valley.

I drove to the location near Chipmunk Creek Road today, and was accompanied by Fisheries officers who had been on patrol in the valley. They estimated that this largest of 3 asbestos dumps in 2015 alone, was approx 60 to 70 bags and was dumped from a tandem axle vehicle, likely a dump truck due to tracks seen in the snow.

I have yet again phoned this incident in to the Conservation office/RAPP line, FLNRO, and to our MLA in charge of Crown land in the Chilliwack River Valley.

Cleanup of these events costs taxpayers literally thousands of dollars. Many residents are doing their level best looking out for the crown land in the valley but some dumpers seem to do their worst in the dark of the night.  I am strongly advocating that the province supply more conservation officer presence and surveillance on the ground and very heavy fines for anyone caught dumping.  I feel strongly that money of this magnitude is much better spent on prevention than cleanup and our undermanned and overworked conservation officers need more help!

It irritates me to no end that people feel they can just dump things wherever they want. This is the kind of thing that will eventually end access for everyone into the backwoods.

What will it take? Stiffer fines?

I saw this first hand a couple of days ago. There must be some way of tracking it back to who dumped it there.

Offenders shall be stuffed in the yellow bags.

But only after they are neutered.
You don't want any of their spawn crawling around. >:(

More Conservation Officers would be a start, the Branch is so understaffed.

Looks like a pro job. Charge the customer for the hazardous dump fee then dump in the bush. What a crock of $hit.

Not sure what waste management facilities are there in the valley but I'd say it should cost people $0 to get rid of toxic waste such as asbestos. This is disgusting and should never happen in any area or city let alone our beautiful outdoors and rivers but maybe someone can shed light on how incidents like this could be prevented first place...

I think you answered your own question.
There needs to be a $0 dump fee for hazardous dumping. The revenue should be a part of our taxes we pay for curb side garbage pickup. All the dump fees do is encourage crap like this to continue. In the end the taxpayer pays for the cleanup anyways.
I'd love to see more Conservation Officers aswell, but this is a big problem everywhere not just the Chilliwack Valley. You'd need an officer standing guard at every bend in the road.
They can't even stop illegal dumpers from dumping on abandoned house lots in Vancouver let alone out in the sticks.

Unfortunately true.

At least we (as a community) are also in a good position to lend a helping hand to try and bust these asshats, by calling in any suspicious behavior.  Fishermen represent a lot of eyes on the water, often at odd hours when the perpetrators probably are most active.  Are notices being posted on the river and in tackle shops asking anglers and the public to lend a hand?

That's probably exactly what it is.

Same as the mattresses in the ditches because people don't want to pay the $20 to drop it at the dump.
