Ocean trip ideas
« on: February 22, 2016, 09:07:03 PM »

About 10 of us are planning a trip this year... Looking for some input and recommendations.
This is what I know so far:

About 10 of us
Planning 2 days of fishing (thinking one day salmon one halibut?)...depends on the cost I guess...
Guessing van island so drive there one day at each end of trip makes it a 4 day, 3 night deal...
Looking for a place with decent food/accommodations. Nothing fancy but would be good to be big enough so we could all hang out in the off fishing hours in some sort of communal area

Looking for times of the year recommendations, areas, charter/lodging etc...

Appreciate any input

Not sure if this one is short enough for you, but Kyuquot Sound with Murphy Sportfishing is a pretty good option (just put up a video of our trip there from last year). The first day you basically drive there (I caught the first ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo) to Fair Harbour. You have to be there by 3pm and they'll pick you up by boat. The boat ride to the lodge is about 30 minutes. Once you get there, orientation, dinner, then fishing in the evening from 5ish til 8 or 9.
Day two and three are full days of fishing, then day four is a few hours of fishing in the morning, followed by brunch, then they boat you back to the car and you drive home. We caught the 5pm ferry from Nanaimo.

Price is around $2k per person which covers boat rides to the lodge, accommodations (rooms sleep 2 or 3 people), meals (very good), guided fishing on their Grady Whites (3 or 4 people per boat), all the fish cleaning and packing of course. If you're a group of 10 you can probably get a deal...

Another option might be Canadian Princess

Or you could head south into WA/OR and do an ocean trip that could include those target species AND tuna.  Tuna fished once and it was a blast!  Troll rods werent nearly as fun as the jig rods tho!

How far out do they have to go down there?

Apparently Murphys runs a tuna trip as well,  think it's a 30 mile run one way.

Murphy's tuna trips in Kyuquot run in the last week of August and first week of September.

There are multiple independent charter guys in places like Bamfield and Tahsis.
The cost is about $1000 per day for the boat and $100 per night per person.
(The best guys are probably well booked already)

Bamfield would be better for hali but there is decent hali fishing near Nootka Sound.
There is a lodge inside Nootka Sound that looked good (forget the name).

You need to know someone who can arrange the charter.
I had a guy in Tahsis but he retired a few years ago.
(My boat prices may be a little low as it has been a few years since I've gone)

In Tofino, we did trips with Jeff Hale and stayed at Crystal Cove Resort. You can get two pretty big cabins to accommodate ten people, and have your communal hangouts down at the beach in the evening. The only problem is Jeff is only one boat, but he might be able to hook the rest of the group with other guides. Here's the story I did on that trip from 2013:

Another one, if you decide to do it early in the season, is with Bon Chovy from Granville Island. They do the overnight Gulf Island trips. Depart from Granville Island, fish on the way there, stay on the island for the night (or two, I'm sure Jason can customize the trips) and fish on the way back on the last day. You're targeting chinook salmon and lingcod, in May and June I think.

look into the sea beem in bamfield. good guys, good prices. you have to bring your own food and drinks. they have a full kitchen to cook in. not the fanciest place but always have a good time. close to the fishing as well.

Glen at Pacific Rim...

Too bad about Oak Bay going down in Ukee, good memories on the puke boats.
