Just caught 2 men and a small boy checking my crab trap. Literally red handed.
The strange thing was they passed me on the way out while I was checking another trap. Headed around the point and there they were.

I chewed them out the best I could but with the small boy there I had to bite my tongue a bit.
Otherwise I would have probably made myself a seat on their boat. Basically embarrassed them in front of their son, what are people teaching their kids these days.

Their excuse was "we don't know who's it was"
And "this is our first time out here we don't know where the crabs are"

Lucky the kid was in the boat or I probably would have gone for a swim trying to get in their boat.

I should mention it was a red tin can I think smoker craft with a blacked out small outboard looked like tohatsu or something

In the heat of the moment I totally forgot about calling it in. They buggered off quick and I wouldn't have a good enough description as all I saw was red.

You didn't say how old the boy was , hopefully old enough to understand what POS the adults are , hopefully really embarrassed them

Please report to the poaching the the DFO , even a couple of days late , as someone who has had their traps poached - and stolen - before i would appreciate it

To summarize the description:

2 adult males and a male child in a red car topper type boat (possibly a Smoker Craft) with an outboard motor with blacked out cowling.

Where do you suppose they launched from?  I bet they are not first time poachers. Maybe just first time caught.

The boy was maybe 6-8 yrs old. I made it very clear to them what they were doing was wrong.
They barely spoke English but I got my point across.

I have a bad habit of forgetting what I'm supposed to do in these situations as I get taken over by what I want to do...

I assume they launched at cates or Port Moody.
To add to description they were Asian. Maybe 12' smoker craft.

I had too much respect for the little guy on the boat. Being a father of 2 myself really made me put on the brakes. Wish I had taken a couple of pictures to post here and turn them in.

No, they only barely spoke English while you were there. Trust me, once you were gone, their English was perfectly fine.

I have friends that live and crab in that area and they have their traps poached all the time by the same people as described above. You should have followed them. The kid is learning a bad habit from the adults. Sad

Sad to hear this is happening more frequently there. I now crab from shore but when we had the inflatable years ago, our traps were never poached even if we left them out for 3-4 hours or more. I don't understand these people..if you can afford a boat, why can't you get yourselves a few cheap crab traps from Army and Navy and catch your own?

Thanks, after reading that I called the ORR line and gave them all the info I could. I also told them that apparently they match the description of some guys some locals had been seeing doing the same thing.

Hmmm...I wonder if Fisheries Officers would attend?  Yes, they are peace officers, but would they be concerned about theft of crabs. Is that covered under the Fisheries Act, or any other acts that they enforce?  Would theft of crabs from traps instead be a matter for municipal law enforcement?
