I've had that happen several times - mostly with kokanee. And it never seems to fail that the fish you want to release is the one that goes bouncing around in the boat.  I've had to keep a few because it was just too much for the fish with the stress and scale loss.

It makes you feel pretty bad but what do you do when they launch themselves into the boat and come off?

Oh and then it's even more special when there are other boats around to witness this as the poor fish beats itself inside your tin boat.

It's not the first and it won't be the last.
