I want to give the early cap coho run a try (probably float fishing roe) but wasn't sure when the coho fishing season there really starts. The page for it under fishing locations says they can be caught as early as April but since the drive is a solid 45 minutes and I don't have much time to fish these days I don't want to make the trip until theres a reasonable chance of hooking up. Also I have only fished there twice during 2014 (skunked both times other than some small trout) so any tips for coho would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Mid to late June is usually a pretty safe bet, but it really comes down to the river level, which is influenced by how much it rains. I'd take a look at the fishing report archive and see which dates from the past few years were successful for other members.

I fished the Cap pretty vigorously in spring 2014. You can get them now but it's hard. There are very little around and they are mostly small fish (1-2lbs) at this time of the year. The water level has been at levels high enough for them to get up for the past few months so they would already be in the system, not so much at the mouth. Your best bet would be to go explore. Even if it is 45 minutes away for you. It's a canyon river for the most part so you will need to hike and explore to find spots. There are always fish at the top by the hatchery but they are stale and mostly lock jawed. You can spend days and not get them to bite. I would check pools in mid river etc and hope to get lucky with a few fish hanging around. Like Rodney says, the end of June is your best bet for any real numbers, but there are a couple around .

my dear friend , let me disagree with you about "end of june" part my statistics still says it`s "may" for early ones and "September" for prime time , but since both of us were monitoring levels at cap , I do agree that they in already

Don't forget that the Cap has a bait ban in effect staring Aug 1 through to Oct 31, for those of you who fish it in Sept. 

As for spring/summer, best to keep an eye on the water level and be aware of the tides in the lower portion.  The bite can be on fire as waves of fish move through. Also be ready to fish with the masses!

don't need to use bait in September spinners were deadly last year , guy beside me was slaying them with rooster tail style spinners

Roe will work, as will anything else. Gotta find out what will entice them. I wouldn't waste roe there this time of the year. The numbers are so low, and since you are new to it, you may way to use a fly/spoons/spinners/etc.

My dear friend , let me disagree with you again , liked I told you before I went to cap in may with chunk of roe in my pocket and rod in my hand w/o any hope of CATCHING a fish (I had 70$ wallmart spinning combo with float I just like that area and hike is pretty cool , so by the time I got there like 5-6 like were fishing already , and none of them used BAIT , just spoons/spinners/flys ... but guess what happened after I put a piece of roe on my hook and let it drift ))) ....  I shared a piece with guy beside me  , and guess what happened when he let it drift )) it was funny situation

With all those guys with waders , fancy rods/reels ......

I just tend to use up some of my open roe jars.
Spoons, spinners , flies, jigs... all work.
The fish dictate the flavour of the day.
The Angler is the one that needs to adapt.

Some times with luck, sometimes with timing.

There is no magic lure or bait.
Just well timed and if fished properly.

PS.   What does having waders,
where I can safely walk and release fish if I have to do with anything?
there are a few Steelhead in there that cannot be kept, clipped or wild.

And what's a fancy rod and reel?
I have some good equipment and waders.

Don't always wear my waders (weather and temp a determining factor along with slippery fall on your butt rocks) but am always prepared to get wet.

So, what's a fancy rod and reel?
I've got a few different setups and just want to know what I should fish with; should I run into you.

I've caught 2 wild coho fishing the chuck south end of Bowen this past week. They were small maybe cap coho?  I was targeting springs said to be Squamish fish.
