Pike minnows and peamouth chub part of whitefish quota?
« on: May 01, 2016, 02:52:30 PM »

I was recently having a discussion with a fishing buddy and FWR member about this confusing issue in the regs. I've always assumed that pike minnow and peamouth chub don't count as part of the daily quota of whitefish (since both species are in the minnow/carp family, not salmonids). My friend says otherwise and the limit of 15 also applies to these fish in freshwater. Can someone with more experience with the regs help sort this out?
Thanks

They do not count as whitefish limit.

For saltwater (tidal portion of the Fraser River), the daily quota of pikeminnow and peamouth chub is 20 (other species):

For freshwater, because they are not categorized as gamefish, there isn't a daily quota.

Thanks for the clarification guys.  :) I think the umbrella term 'whitefish' has been misused a lot hence all this confusion over the regs.

Eating? Heck no..not my cup of tea.  :P It was just something that was brought up during conversation.
Earlier this week while fishing at Buntzen I caught a bunch of pike minnows. Gave them away to a guy fishing next to me. He says his mom makes soup out of them. Apparently almost any fish can be used for food if you're resourceful enough...or if you're starving. ;)

Yes, because northern pikeminnow and peamouth chub are not whitefish.

Don't knock it until you try it.

Hyperbole much? If you were actually starving you would eat one without question and be glad to have it. In fact if someone were to cook one up properly and serve it to you without you knowing what it is, you'd probably just shrug and say 'it tastes like fish' ...
