Lots of fun, the hunt for a boat.
You will have to prioritize your uses and clarify some points.
When you say "take the family out". How many people is that? Water sports activities like tubing, or just fishing?
When you say "smaller lakes", what do you mean? Small enough to car-top or trailer? If trailering, not a lot of options for 'small lakes'. Locally, Pitt, Allouette, Cultus and Kawkawa and a few others are your only bets with trailer access, but none are small.
If weather is an issue, taking them in the spring or fall, lots of rain to contend with. In the summer, you have to consider the sun. So a bimini or enclose would be a must?
You will
likely want a 16-18 Aluminum boat depending on how big the fam is and what you will want to do with it, watersports wise. Tiller or console... Your budget will determine how nice of a boat you will get.
When you see one that seems priced right, ACT FAST. This type of boat simply does not last.
