Extra-long poles or rods
« on: July 27, 2016, 05:18:54 PM »

I have seen lots of people used extra-long poles (more than 16 feet long) to catch chub and pikeminnow.  Most of them don't even have reels and therefore seem inconvenient.  What is the advantage of using these long sticks?

Where can you buy extra-long poles or rods in greater Vancouver?

I don't know where you can buy them. It's old country tackle popular in parts of Asia and Europe & the idea is to have the rod tip directly over the bait which is often suspended from a float.

Last weekend on the tidal Fraser I was trying out a friend's 13 foot rod (equipped with a spinning reel) for chubs for the first time. It has a highly sensitive tip, which makes detecting bites much easier plus the length provides more leverage especially when trying to land fish over steep banks. It does take a while to get used to though especially when casting nearer to shore.

I saw some of these at the Richmond Night Market the other day.  Didn't look too closely at them, though.

Head to First Light Fishing and tackle in Burnaby. That is the best place to get your poles.
