My first 2 Sockeye
« on: July 23, 2004, 09:19:42 AM »

Got up at 3:30, headed to the fraser, attatch my 15ft leader, 3/0 gammie, 2 oz betty.
Firstcast, nice 5lbs Sockeye to the beach. Second cast, 7lbs Sockeye to the beach. I should quit and go home, I thought, but I wanted to see what was going to happen on my third cast.
Well I let my third cast rip, and was rewarded with a 25lbs Spring.
Three cast, three fish, then I woke up, what an awsome dream that was. ;) ;) ;D ;D
Sorry guys and gals, best I can do as I can't get out. :P

Only 15 feet ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
when I cast mine I have to Get Norm to hold my leader off the beach or I won't be able to cast it!! At least 30-35 feet for me, I like to attach three or four hooks alond the length of leader too as it increases my odds ;D ;D

Don't joke about things like that, as new member and new fisherpeople to this site, might think your serious.
He was only joking, only one hook per line.

And remember thickrick, I said it was a dream, I really use 22ft leaders. ;D
To give the fish a bit of sporting chance use a 3 foot leader, is cheaper, safer, easier to cast and land your prized sockeye. ;D ;D

I agree Chris, no need for a 22' leader, but even with a 3' leader they are still lined no? I remember a couple of guys at Beaver last year using at least 22', they would do a double-spey with their gear rods just to keep the hook from sinking before the cast. GONG!

Be prepared for a lot more casts to get them.

When I was a TOW er 4 years back I used a 3  to 2 foot leader to start my short TOW ing career.

Fishing above Jesperson a fellow said lenghten out to 7 feet (short in todays standards) first cast after change bingo a nicely TOW ed sockeye.

In the second year of TOW ing my boy who discovered before me that the fish were not biting came out with me.

"Watch this dad: he says "see this bear hook".

Three casts with this black gammie in the coloured Fraser yielded 2 sockeye. It proves your children can teach us older generation a thing or two.

It was not long after that my TOW ing career ended for good.

Thanks son.

I've tried that experiment before. With flossin its simple math, if your floss is 70 % longer than the next guy you should hook 70 % more.

I am willing to give this a try. Next time out on the Fraser, I will use a 3ft leader first and see if I still get fish.
When we get out there, we usually catch more then 2 fish anyways.
So why don't we all give it a try and report what the outcome is.
If we don't get anything, and all the long leader guys and gals are getting fish, switch over and see what happens.
So give it a try, and tell us your results.

Most excellent idea !

I think most people here acknowledge the fact that dam near all the socs hooked while BB the fraser are flossed... hence there is no reason to shorten your leaders guys, the fish arent going to magically start biting...all your doing is reducing your chance of flossing that fish.

We all know that fish swim up travel lanes.   The longer the leader the more chance you have of a fish intersecting your line between the weight and the hook...exactly where they need to be to be flossed.

Keep your leaders a managable/safe length, thats my best advice.

Yes, its possible.

When the fish are there you'll still end up flossing. Couple years back I flossed socks with a 12 inch leader, 15# mainline and 6' trout spinning outfit.  I think going THAT short is a bit extreme, but it sure is easier to land a fish with a shorter leader.

No need to make the leader longer than 10' IMO, otherwise when you're on the shore tryin to beach the fish its still half way out in the river!!  Its fun watching people pretend they got a spey rod tho.
