2016/2017 Wally Hall Junior Memorial Steelhead Derby
« on: December 10, 2016, 12:38:15 PM »

Wally Hall Junior Memorial Fishing Derby is back again in Chilliwack which started on December 1st! This annual seasonal steelhead derby takes place on the Chilliwack/Vedder River and proceeds collected from derby entries are used to restoring fish habitat for this watershed.

Chilliwack/Vedder River's winter steelhead fishery takes place between December and April. This derby targets hatchery marked steelhead only. Derby tickets are $20 each, which can be purchased at our Abbotsford and Chilliwack locations.

To weigh in your fish, simply bring it to the Chilliwack location (45150 Luckakuck Way Chilliwack). The derby ends on March 15th, and awards will be given for the top three fish, which will happen on March 26th at the Royal Canadian Legion (5661 Vedder Road Chilliwack).

Proceeds generated from the derby will be donated to Fraser Valley Watersheds Coalition, which further raises funds from various government agencies so habitat restoration projects can take place on the Chilliwack/Vedder River watershed.

The first fish of the derby was weighed in this morning by Curt Batschkewitz! Congratulations! Curt's fish weighed in at 7.3lb.

Good luck everyone!

GONG!
All the snow we have out here now along with a strong out flow wind as well as drifting snow will keep it a small "Gong" for a while. ;D ;D

there are no gong shows for steelhead....just not enough people on the river for that to happen. The next gong show for the vedder will be in september when the pinks arrive.  ::)

lol pardon? take a look at the crossing to bergman in a month or so on a weekend. goooooong show. the crossing to wilson isnt much better these days. Tamahi used to be one of the least fished stretches for steelhead, now its super busy. the upper river spots are just as bad, particularly the prison run and slab.

Busy is only one requirement for a "gong show". Last spring I fished across from an area near Lickman where there was a couple of people every 15 feet or so for a kilometer. People were enjoying themselves, casting a bit, BS-ing a lot. No snagging, no treble hooks and no fights. No fish either, but that didn't seem to matter.

Agree. Steelheading is never about the meat. It is a bonus but not a requirement for any steelhead trip. It is a way of life to experience nature for us steelehaders in the depth of winter when most normal souls are housebound or in the malls while the hardnosed steelheaders brave the elements for an encounter with the elusive grey ghost, bar of chrome, or sliver bullet, whatever you want to call it. Only selective few have the fishing blood to do that year after year even without much meat to show.

Sooooooooooo.......if you wait till next late august/early september during pink season... you find the definition of a "gong show" properly described and defined. Vedder steelheaders should never be classified as "gong Show" material.
