Exactly. A small open Jon boat with maybe a 15" transom and 3 adults should never be out in the Sound. Lucky to still be alive after 4 hours in the water. Hopefully next time they go out in a proper size and equipped boat and also carry a PLB.

They were all wearing PDF's. That's probably saved their lives.

No, they had to scramble to get them on in time;

The four-metre vessel capsized and the family had just seconds to grab their life jackets before the boat overturned, tossing them into the water.

P.S.  There are no rogue waves on the lee side of Anvil Island.  I'd be willing to bet he either put it broadside or was at idle and the wind spun him around broadside.  If he was pulling up crab traps in a car topper he'd already be listing hard.

Lessons will be learned, and this time... THIS TIME... nobody paid the ultimate price!

Some more info on the incident. Say what you want about how this could have been easily prevented, but a tip of the hat to the father for his efforts to save his sons.

Yeah, the term "rogue wave" is thrown around a bit too much.

Waves are waves.  Unpredictable at times, but you have to be able to anticipate things.  Weather the waves are wind, tide, current, boat traffic related etc.  You have to be competent and aware at all times.

Sh1t happens on the water.  4 guys on a 12ft boat in the sound, not wearing their PFDs is not setting yourself for a safe experience.

i will barely take my 20ft jet boat out there unless the winds cooperate. open bow boats in the ocean is a bad idea especially if your entering the ocean from the fraser.

Been in the Fraser / Sandheads / Georgia Straight / Howe Sound 1000s of times in various sized boats.
13-21 fters.
Let me put it this way .... 98% of the time had a great safe day & bad conditions nil but there was that other times I would not repeat going thru the same conditions even for 1 million dollars.
For starters:
8fter white caps in a 21 fter & had to make the turn. ( Howe Sound )
12-14 ft standing waves in the Fraser in one area ( 16 ft boat )
Honestly the boat they were in was definately a gamble even if the conditions looked ok.
Winds can come up suddenly or tide changes create currents & also wake waves from larger crafts & commercial vessels.
