I see a lot of conversation concerning crowded rivers, leader lengths , fish handling , fish identification , and little concerning the issue of garbage left by anglers. I myself work on weekends making it difficult to attend organized river clean up days. So I carry small garbage bags and clean up around me every time I go out fishing. I was inspired by witnessing a couple of anglers repeatedly doing just this.I believe fishing is a privelage and not a right and hope to encourage other anglers to keep our rivers clean.
I would like to thank those anglers ,who showed me through their example, how I could help so much by doing so little.

Sadly my fish bag usual comes home full of garbage rather then fish.  IF your parents never beat it into you to clean the environment you probably don't. Picking up garbage is a habitual behavior for me, like putting on a seat belt.

I would rather see people clean up after them self then uses these so called "ethical angling" methods.

Good on all 3 of you. I remember picking up great coils of discarded mono on one of those sockeye flossing bars and getting laughed at by some other anglers, one of whom asked if I couldn't afford to buy new line.

The garbage left behind on many popular spots is disgraceful!

I usually tuck a plastic shopping bag inside my waders for this purpose. But it's happened a number of times where I have filled my bag, there is still more garbage to pick, up, but then I find a plastic bag amongst the garbage to pick up the rest. That is fortunate, sad and ironic.

It's helpful when they leave behind the case so I can put the empties back in and carry that out, rather than waste valuable bag space.

Always leave it in better shape than you found it.

I've always wondered what motivates the behaviour to leave behind one's trash.  A favourite saying of mine is "All behaviour makes sense". It's too easy to say people are pigs or idiots, but that doesn't get at the underlying values and beliefs that drive their behaviour.

The same people that litter on the riverbank would probably also say that they enjoy fishing and being outside in nature. That is incongruent to me but maybe not to them.

Or why would you go through the effort of carrying in full beverage or food containers, but not carry out the now-lighter, emptier, containers? That is incongruent to me, but maybe not to them.

Is it cultural? Is it family or peer group values that they learned/observed? Is there a sense of entitlement and rights? Is it an act of protest that they can't fish for pinks?

I'd love to have a focus group of "litterbugs" to understand their behaviour. And no, the fact that I was a psychology major in university has nothing to do with it

I'd love to see places that sell drinks add a charge for "to go" cups, instead of giving a discount for bringing your own mug. Even if the price difference wound up being the same it would be a recurring reminder that there's a cost, both financial and environmental, to the use of disposables.

I'd also love (LOVE!) to see a deposit on cigarette butts. Like cans at 5 cents a pop. Not sure how practical the redemption aspect would be but it would encourage people to either not litter them, or pick them up for a nickel.

I really liked that the Chilliwack cleanup notice encouraged people to bring their own mugs because disposables wouldn't be available at the event. The cups managed to sneak in anyways but I'm sure the heads-up reduced the number used

Cammer does a sheet tonne  for the resource and will put my resume up against anyone here. On volunteer hours and impact,   let's take recent clean up on vedder. World Rivers day... cammer was teaching fishing at Allco,park running the fishing pond for ARMS, I also am a recipient of a National Recreational Fishery Award for the Family Fishing Society. Cammer wonders why Milo says stupid sheet on here and wonders why people don't call him on it?

I remember back when I did a Bacherlor's degree in Archaeology in the 70s and a Professor quipped that we spend years and substantial $ retrieving and analyzing the garbage of some poorest people who ever walked the planet.

The cost of making a bottle or a beer can is quite a bit higher than the deposit. If the return fee was the same as what it cost to make it's been suggested much of our waste problem would vanish.

The sense in the behavior is that there is no perceived value in packing the trash out. Some of us see the value of a landscape free of trash. Others are blind to this.
