--how about no holding any fish out of water that is intended for release...we should encourage the practice but don't need a rule.
--websites like this can state in their fish porn section that they will delete any picture of a fish intended for release that is held out of the water.
--I don't see why people are hung up on and give an expert opinion on whether the fish in the picture is interior stock steelhead...it shouldn't matter what the species is or how rare it is.

Excellent post skaha. But a rule would curb the amount of poor fish handling way down. As sports fisherman our bigget impact on the fish is from the time the fish is landed to the time its released.

Seriously? How would this rule be enforced...? By internet shaming or ???

Encouraging the practise is about all you could hope for ..

Rodney, you wanna weigh in on this? Every Day?

I see plenty of videos and pics on here that show careful c&r with a quick 'hold up out of water' for the camera. You guys breakin' the rules.... ?

It's already a law in washingington state. This would be a fantastic rule here. A fish held in the water makes for just as good of a picture and it will stop fish being pulled into boats or dragged onto the sand and rocks

It is also a law that you can’t fish in your pajamas in Chicago.  :o

It's hard enough to encourage people to shorten up their leaders , not to bottom bounce etc... I think rules for these issues alone would benefit the fish more.

I dont wholly disagree with you but other practises that are not illegal hurt the fish more imo

In Washington, they are able to ticket you if you post a photo of a wild steelhead out of the water. It would be enforced simply through people not being able to contain their excitement and posting their lift shots online. That, and of course, public shaming as well would curb it.

Kitty and I take great care with the fish we catch. As we fish more and more, and blog more, we've been trying to further refine our photos and fish handling to set an example. I'm a firm believer that a quick lift of less than 10 seconds (our average "lift time" is between 3 and 6 seconds based on video footage) is not going to cause any measurable harm to a fish. That being said, keeping them in the water as much as possible is always best. If you follow my blog, you'll see that the more recent pictures are mostly of fish partially, or fully, in the water. The only time a lift shot is done now is to capture the scenery in the backdrop.

While it would make photos slightly more challenging, especially if you want background, a rule change wouldn't bother me. I don't believe it is needed personally, but I do think avid has a point. I hate seeing boat shots. I would fully support a rule stating that you are not able to lift a wild fish over/into a boat. There is no way a boat shot takes less than 10 seconds start to finish - and if you drop it, the fish is now flopping around on a hard metal surface (or a grippy/carpet surface that many guys have in their boats now which would even be worse). Furthermore, if the rule change would stop people from dragging them up beaches shake and bake style, or from posting high and dry shots (no water dripping) - where they've obviously been out of the water for far too long - then I am/would be willing to sacrifice some "convenience" for the greater good (in the form of a rule change).

Not for steelhead they wouldn't. There's a few desperados that long line steelhead but it's very minimal.

Also no wool or grippy tailing gloves would be a huge step in the right direction as well.

Completely agree with you. 2 years ago I saw a fly guy on the Cheakamus fight a steelhead for 10 minutes and he then held it up for atleast 20-30 seconds. A week later I found the fish washed up dead a couple kms downstream

there is Federal regulation that applies to handling fish and anglers can & have been charged under these. The Provincial Synopsis has an extensive description of c&r procedures on Page 11 that include these recommendations;

Quote
Keep fish immersed in water unless you have chosen to legally harvest the fish. A fish out of water is suffocating. Every second a fish is out of the water decreases it’s chance of survival by 1%. Also, internal injuries and scale loss are much more likely to occur when a fish is out of the water.

So every time a fish jumps it has a 1-2% chance of dying?

Quote
Fish don’t have eyelids or pupils that constrict; therefore, their eyes cannot adjust to an increase in light intensity. Covering a fish’s eyes in shallow water (without touching the eyes or pushing down on the gills)
can reduce the amount they struggle and minimize stress.

Ha Ha! Studies on air exposure of fish that had been captured by angling have provided tables that estimate the impact on survival. I have never sen such a study related to fish jumping. Are you thinking of fish that have been hooked or just jumping? I doubt most jumping fish are exposed to air for even a second but there must be some mortality associated with fish that are hooked but lost.

You need to hang out at more lakes with Pennasks. They get some serious air (when not hooked).
 :P

This sounds like a study taken out of context. I’d love to see the data.
No way a fish taken out of water for 5 seconds has a 5% chance of dying.
The lakes would be barren.
