BC Lions ...out with the old & in with the new & improved.
« on: February 12, 2019, 01:30:30 PM »

Big signing today inking Mike Reilly QB at $700,000 per season.
Burnham receiver signed at $200,000 per season.
Relatively new GM ( 2nd yr ) new coach, new QB & resigning of key Lions...
Trying to get their ROAR back in the 2019 season.
Reilly knows this area well as he was a Lion for was it 2 yrs? before going to the Eskimos.

Think he won at least 1 Grey Cup ( maybe 2 ) with Esks in the not so long time he's been there.
He's not so injury prone as Lulay.
More confidence than up & down Jonathan Jennings.
Jennings game was like a walk on thin ice ...he just got happy to make a good play then faltered ...
It was like he needed a time out between plays. Like a clock that needed winding up every minute.

Watch out Calgary & the league.
Think the Edmonton fans will be giving the boo boo boo to their former QB when Lions visit northern Alberta.  He divorced them to get fresh air & maybe he doesn't see eye to eye with Esk coach & for the dough. $$$.  ;D

Love the signing of Reilly, Burnham, Lemar Durant, Suk Chungh and Duron Carter. Lions now have a potential very potent receiving corp. The downside is that my season tickets are going to cost more next season  ;)

I renewed  my tickets again this year. After all the rally years the fans deserve  a  bone.

Seen the new head coach on tv sports news. He was with a sports reporter on top of a Grouse Mt
He was even trying to ice skate ( not ski ) & had a walker to help him with his balance. Little out dr rink on the mt.
Hey the guy is getting familiar with this area.
I'm getting excited with this coming season.
Football season also means warmer weather.
Too cold & it's near end of a Feb.
25 F last night.
Side note : see a sea gull or crow & ya have a food donation...throw them something. Walnut for crow / small piece whole wheat bread or dry cat chow ...you will make a feathery friend.

Lions couldn't afford to keep SolE because of those free agent signings

Yes had the same idea. SoL E is not the same player he was either. Age & injuries.
Let's just hope Reilly stays healthy as just one big hit will end a QBs reg. play or season or career.
Lots of CFL QBs in history were lost after big hits.  QBs have a big target on their jersy. When they have the ball raging bulls with big horns are heading their direction.
Lions O line needs new blood.
Retirements ...
If the Lions can get it together with all the changes it should equate to W's.
Get all the players but it must be mixed with team chemistry or else the team goes no where.
It's harder to get team chemistry on a football team rather than a hockey team.
Hockey team go to war in season 80 plus games & into 20 plus games in the playoffs. Core group may stay intact for 10 or more yrs.
40 away games hotels etc...
The coach & GM on a football team is the ones that get these guys to jump & how high. With old blood Wally B. gone we will see how the new coach gets the team ready.
Hope he is not too soft being new & adjusting to the position & area.
He better get tough or else the players will con & manipulate the coach.
Think Reilly did not like the coach in Edmonton. He made rookie decisions in playoff games.

Stamps got a WR with "wheels" ...Mayala.
FA we are going to need good receivers to try to get 1st place.
Get 1st & it's two wins road to Cup!!!!!!
NHL 16 wins.
Home advantage & two wins to Grey Cup.
Stamps will be the team to beat in the standings again.
The season means something as 1st place means a better chance to be CFL champions.
Minus weather game conditions....snowy icy field throws in a monkey wrench.
A talented team with skills has it all washed away/ eliminated on bad fields.
Think the Grey Cup  will be played in a possibly bad winter location this year.

I think the Lions have a good set of receivers with Bryan Burnham, Lemar Durant, and Duron Carter.

Checked web & Grey Cup is in Calgary.
Yes these are very good receivers.
Plus add in a RB that can get 5-6 yds average plus good hands ( catch out of the back field. ) plus Reilly will run for 6-10 yds when guys are covered if the space is there.
Adds up to an offence that will be hard to stop.
BC Lions march down the field may be the norm like the champ on Jeopardy ....winning 1.6 or something. Win win win.

Ricky Ray retires after 16 yrs.
Think he has 3-4 Grey Cups or something ?
2-3 Edmonton & is it 1 with Argos? Or 2 ?
One of the best. Surprised he did not get injured more often as he 'd sit patiently in the pocket till his reciever made the break.
He could of been plastered like a sitting duck so many times thru the yrs.
Finally he was nailed & injured neck.
Was it in the pocket or did he take off down field ? Forget.
Think it was during a passing play.

So many great QBs in cfl history. Let's see what 10 QBs come to my mind ...Ronny Lancaster, Paul Brothers,Tom Clements, Ricky Ray,Tom Wilkerson, Moon,D Flutie, Conridge Hollyway, ( how many is that? ) 8 ok two more...Lulay & finally Joe Kapp. ( bonus Jackie Parker )
These are the first 10 that popped into my mind.
Was going to say Danny McManus (sp?) but his name did not come to me..face but not name.
Of course Canadian Russ Jackson should be in there.

The sports today 6pm tv news had a report on the Lions O Line.
They went for good players as they want to protect our $700,000 QB Reilly.
( wonder if that's USA or Canadian pay check ? ) most of players in the league are American I think. Ratio ...so I assume their pay is in USA dollars??? Could be wrong on this one.

Paul Brothers was one of the worst quarterback I had the misfortune to watch. He should be in the Hall of Shame. ;)

Agreed ! Basically that was the time I started watching football on tv & going to a lot of games at Empire Stadium. Mostly sat 1/2 up near 45 yd line East Side ( north ). Great view.
Dal Richards band Crazy George banging his drum...going nuts.
Ted Gerela side kick ...What was that we all thought.
Paul Brothers hand off to Evensan or sp? Off centre or tackle...straight ahead ...3-4-5 yds.
Brothers back to pass ...incomplete or interception ...sometimes complete.
Did he ever have a good game ???? Amazing if the Lions won with him in there. And they stuck with him a lot of years...no improvement ..bye finally.
Johnny Musso but he got a bad knee. RB.
Ray Neetles good LB.
Jim Young SB or wide reciever. He'd catch the ball over the shoulder & then run like a deer.
Or catch it running across the field & then cut it downfield...good hands.
Dirty 30. Eagle Keys Jackie Parker Don Matthews ...good coach in the 90's ...what's his name? He was coach where Lions best Esks in Edmonton, then beat Stamps  in Calgary & the was it Baltimore Stallions in Vancouver Grey Cup. 94/95 or something. Got the field goal to win it. Set up by long pass. ( possibly trapped the ball on field but still counted as a catch )
Lots of football memories to be had. Time goes on.
