Hi Guys and Gals,

I was doing some fishing at the local lake the other day and a guy across from me mentioned he had a home made one piece ultra light rod.   I didn't think of asking him where to get it or what the story is on it but.... I am wondering do any of you use a good ultra light rod that is great for these local lakes.   the cheaper the better but....

I have a Shakespeare wild series UL 7' rod that was only $20 when I bought it on sale. 2-8 pound test rating, very light rod but has held up fairly well.

I have broken 4 UL rods and eventually don't want any ultra light rod. The fish feels same in ultra light and moderate light rod. The rod bend more does not mean much.

Yeah they're priced a little higher, but cheaper is not always better.

went with a fenwick eagle UL 9ft. great rod for the price. had to get from amazon because no one could get it. $80 i think.

I received a message from someone on another forum that told me to put a spinning reel on a flyrod.... never thought of this ... I am sure my casting isn't going to be the best but it will be sensitive...

The ghetto spinning rod! Nothing wrong with that, I did that for many years until I had some custom built from a fly rod blank. Just get a cheap 4 or 5 wt fly rod for it. It'd be good for float fishing, and bottom fishing, but not so great for casting and retrieving a lure.

for a cheapo rod I would go with the eagle claw featherlight rods 50 bucks with a limited warranty hard to beat. I own the kokanee casting one and its a cool little rod. Its the 2-8 version and is a good light trolling rod but if your trolling heavy pots and pans maybe a tad light.

my most used and most expensive(mostly used for ultralight float fishing) is the fenwick hmg 7' 2-6  70ul-ms-2 spincast rod

I also own the fenwick 5'6'' ultra light 1-6 line  hmx which is a nice little compact float and small lure stick for under the seat.

Get a telescopic rod.
Convenient, east to store, travel with.
They are big in Europe and increasing in popularity here.

Not really anything specific, any reputable brand will do.

I find the telescopic rods to stiff.   also the cheapo's have crappy guides which makes a world of issues.   I do love that they break down into small space though.

yup break down into small space and compact is the key form me as I just chuck it in my carry on....fish some grayling in the in-between time of work and then hand it off to a nephew when I get back home....and do it again next year....
