Trudeau government backpedals on election promise to phase out B.C. open net salmon farms by 2025

Following an outcry from the salmon farming industry, the Trudeau government has backed away from its election campaign commitment to phase out open net pen salmon farming on B.C.’s West Coast by 2025.

First Nations and industry announce

of 17 fish-farm sites between 2019 and 2023. Some farms will be immediately
decommissioned; some will remain in operations for various terms (two to four
years). By the end 2022, 10 farms will have ceased operations. The remaining
seven farms will cease operations, unless First Nations-industry agreements and
valid Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) licences are in place by 2023.”

2022 95 salmon farming licenses expire in BC.
Effective June 2022 British Columbia will grant Land Act tenures only to fish
farm operators who have satisfied Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) that their
operations will not adversely impact wild salmon stocks, and who have
negotiated agreements with the First Nation(s) in whose territory they propose to
operate.
