Fishing Club?
« on: August 11, 2004, 12:10:45 PM »

Is there any sort of fishing club in vancouver where boatless nerds like me can hook up with people to fish with (besides a board like this?)   I heard of a Vancouver Fishing Club, but I dont know if it still operates...I've tried to search for it online and asked at shops but it seems to be this mysterious ethereal thing that i just cant find anything solid about.  Anybody know of any organized or disorganized ways besides chartering that boatless guys can get on the water?

I guess you'll have to make a buddy with someone that owns a boat....

Ya, thats what i figured, it sounded too good to be true, i heard $100 a year for club membership and $25 each time you go out.

Anyone need some company when out on the chuck then? ;)  I pay for gas and smell OK most days. hehe

I partner with a few guys who have boats-there's a lot more to it than 'paying for gas and smelling good'.

You have to be on time-I mean 0500 hrs, have the money not just for gas for the boat but for bait and who knows what else.
Do you drive a reliable vehicle?
Is your fishing gear well maintained?
How much tackle do you have?
What kind of experience?
Can you drive a boat?
Navigate?
Do you have Power Squadron?
Know how to use a GPS?
Can you fix a downrigger?
Tie a figure 8 knot in downrigger wire?
Fight off seasickness?
How are you filleting skills?
Do you like being out for 10 hours catching ZIP and then spending another hour cleaning the boat?
Can you put up with the kind of BS that other people do like my friend's wife throwing a sh*tfit early last Saturday and him phoning me to say we weren't going because the boat motor 'needed work' when I know for a fact it's his bipolar maniac of wife who's gone off her rocker?

LMAO!
It's all true!!!

I could go on and on and on but in the end it's personal contacts that do it.

You might pay attention to adds that say 'looking for a partner'-I've answered a few and occasionally have had a good time.

But if you're just a kid you have no chance-when a person is old enough to have the money to own a boat they want someone who can stand on their own two feet and has done so for a while.

BTW-Your comprehension skills need work-there are two different ideas here-one about the now defunct Fishing Club and the other about the now defunct Water Taxi.
You have the two confused-one operated in the Salt the other on the Fraser.

how about not calling manic depressives (bipolar disorder) "someone who has gone off their rocker"

not everyone can control their actions, reactions and mental stability like most of us can. they have one hell of tough life trying to get through each and every day without a breakdown or suicide, that is'nt their fault at all but rather a chemical imbalance in the brain (that cannot always be treated by simply popping psychiatric drugs)

thank you

for the record, 1 in 3 persons in canada has some form of mental illness.

Wow, Sam, for a God among mortals you sure seem to have alot of hate in you.  I just "threw my line out there"  and made a simple joke (not nearly as bad as the one i just made).  I think my comprehension skills are up to scratch, thanks for the concern though, means alot.  You may want to check up on your own too, it pays to know that when somebody lists one of their "qualities" as smelling good that they are more than likely not serious.  Next time you go out fishing you should make sure that you ask yourself these questions...

Do you have a sense of humor?
Are you easy to get along with?
Can you relax?
Are you able to teach somebody something they may not already know how to do?
Are you patient?
Did you pack your own lunch?
Are you willing to learn?
Are you in this to have fun... and most important,
Do you smell at least OK?

I mean, I dont look for too much more in my fishing buddies.  I just want myself and the guys with me to have a fun and safe time on the water.  Nobody knows everything, and if we did, life would get very boring very fast.  I'd never be allowed on any boat with you though, I'm just a 31yr old kid without a chance because I cant fillet for @#%.  If only my undying love for you was enough... ;D

Otto, glad you said what you did!  I've tried to catch carp in osoyoos, there are big ones there, and I've speared them in Kelowna, tasty to steak up!  Do you guys fish from shore there?

SS I only gonna jump on you for the split second your thought process in that post headed south towards your ar$e.  >:(

(Otto I think the 'off your rocker' comment was probably tonue in cheek.)

Anyhow... I'd sooner take a youngster/teenager out fishing with no experience than someone who's willing to do everything on your check list. Heck man what were you thinking stating that. Who the heck took you fishing for the first time? Or were you left at home because you were JUST A KID.

There's nothing more cherishing than to watch someone new to my favortie pasttime, grin from ear to ear even if they don't meet the requirements of the perfect fishing buddy.

Marmot have you thought about joining a local fish and game club? The list for the lower mainland can be found here:

it might be tongue in cheek.......but there are better ways of wording it..............

thing is my best friend was manic-depressive (bipolar disorder) and hung herself during a depressive phrase. She was 19. My girlfriend is also bipolar, and everyday is a struggle for her, just trying to cope with a basic routine like brushing her teeth and feeding herself properly. having lived with her for two years, i have been with her through the wrist cutting episodes, the non compliance with her medication regime, the several attempted suicides and many hospital stays. i also work in the mental health care field, and see thousands of people who are struggling with the illness. so i don't really take comments like that lightly. thats all.

Situation has been resolved peacefully. Simply a matter of poor wording. There is no need for further comments from anyone.

Let us redirect this post to the original question by Marmot:  fishing clubs for us non boat owning people!!!
