Conservation Officer Checking
« on: August 17, 2004, 10:47:06 PM »

Got checked tonight at Island 22 by a CO, checked my catch and licenses. About time I have witnessed enforcement being out this year.....I have seen barbed hooks taken off the bottom and other common violations this season with doing the observe record report twice. I guess my email worked about more enforcement of CO's and Fisheries for recreational anglers when I sent to a local CO about this particular matter. ;)

I've seen them every day I've been out this year.  They ply the waters in their jet boat from Island 22.

grumman: I've been out a good 15 or so times since May at all different times and this is the 1st I have ever witnessed one checking recreational anglers. If thats the case that you have seen them out thats great news!

Mabelingwane: There is no more bar at Island 22, all washed out from erosion. However some people have walked down the farmers field and gotten a couple at the remaining beach down below. I was at Grassy in my boat.

I didn't see them checking any recreational anglers, but I have seen them every day in their beautiful $50k+ jet boat that they pull behind their $50K truck.  I hope they've been putting all that tax money to good use.  I don't mind paying for good equipment if they're going to use it for the common good.

Are you referring to the BC Fisheries truck and boat? I've seen that one a couple times but not yesterday. The CO was at the gate pulling over everybody who was leaving.

Once for me too.  That was in Shuswap Lake...  But there are special regs there too.

Maybe I look like a poacher, but I get checked at least once a year.  Even got singled out at the Cap once.  I think the CO's wanted to check out my buddies Ocean Sport.  He polished it until it looked like chrome.  Very nice looking boat.

I got checked by a CO who put a wool glove on one hand to feel if there was a partial barb left. Lucky, I only purchase non-barbed hooks. If you clip a barbed hook, be sure there is no barb left. He told me the fine applies no matter of the barb size.
Nice to know there is a CO who really takes his job reiously.

I've been checked a total of 2 times over the years.  Once at scale bar,  once at Herrling Island.  Both times were BEFORE the sockeye opening.  Seen officers in action 3 times other than that during the opening keeping the peace,  and 2 of those counter guys.  RCMP on the waters twice.  One time their wake gave us quite the roll!  >:(
