really cool stuff Scott, thanks for sharing. My mom offered me last weekend If I would go to Cabo San Lucas in April after my exams. I started looking at guided fishing opportunities but didn't see anything surf related or freshwater. I don't have enough people to do a full guided ocean trip (just me). What did your two days fishing with the guide cost? Any other good opportunities to fish on your own or with a guide there?

Besides Wes (cabosurfcaster) there's also Tag Cabo https://www.tagcabosportfishing.com/fleet-7/surf-fishing-in-cabo-san-lucas/ and Desert Gallos https://www.desertgallosfishing.com. Perhaps there are others that Googling will turn up for you. "Guided surfcasting Cabo" seems to turn up lots of relevant hits. Wes mentioned another outfit called Beach Bros but I can't find them online.

I doubt you will find any freshwater fishing as you are in the Sonoran desert. Not to say it's impossible as I did watch a YouTube video about a couple's quest to find a find a rare native trout in the Baja https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYq3brHmw84

Wes charges $200USD for a half day of fishing; that's the group rate. Private guiding costs more, although on the second trip there were not other anglers booked so I got a private trip at the group rate.

Jansen Inshore Tackle is where most anglers go to gear up for self guided fishing https://www.fishandsave.com/collections/jansen-tackle. I don't believe Jansen's does guided fishing.

You can definitely fish on your own. There are very few hotels north of Cabo along the Pacific so you will need a guide or a rental vehicle. However, east of Cabo toward San Jose del Cabo (along the Sea of Cortez) is the "tourist corridor" with many hotels and good fishing right in front of them, at least according to Jansen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIMTWeKIUks

Nice report. I have heard about the beach fishing off Baja and wondered if it could make a part of a seasonal getaway.

Wanted to add that years back, on a Feb trip to Tobago, I was lucky enough to fish for and catch Dorado (also  known as mahi mahi or dolphin depending on the location). I went out with a couple of local fishermen who gillnetted flying fish for the local fish markets and also put out lines for dorado and snapper. The bait was live flying fish which they fished on wire handlines. I had a #11 flyrod and used the same bait. I did catch a really large one. It was the fishing experience of my life. The fish took line off the reel as it grabbed the bait and when I set the hook leapt out of the water within 30 feet in an arc maybe 6 feet high and 15 to 20 feet long. What followed was a fight that took about an hour. At one point the fish ran off with over 200 meters of line. I couldn't believe I didn't break the rod or that I even landed it. I wasn't able to get it weighed properly. Weight estimates were around 40 to 50 lbs.

Winter is the time in the Caribbean. They can also be caught in Hawaii and even the Mediterranean. Anyone who can can get a chance to fish for them should do it. They taste delicious as well.

Sorry for the post hijack!

For reference - I am about 6/2 - gives an idea on the length of the fish. I was told the partly healed wound above the tail is a marlin strike.
