I am completely prepared to get roasted but I don't understand the proper way to attach them and still be able to easily adjust leader length. Long story short, do you just attach a swivel to the end at a set length and that is the way it is forever?

Long story long, got back from my friends annual birthday trip to the Cariboo. Been doing this trip for years. For the Rainbows I have always used flatfish, spoons, plugs, lucky bugs, or raps. If we were going after kokanee it was almost always with small hoochies. This trip my friend insisted on wedding rings. They worked fine but I don't understand how they last. Every time I tie a knot i use about 3-4 inches of line. They start off with a 4' leader but once you tie it on you lose 4". Cut it off and you are down 4", tie it on again and lose another 4"and so on and so on. This doesn't include if I want to run it closer to the dodger one day and further back the next. Once it's cut that is it, can't go longer. Do you just tie them to a swivel and never change leader length again?

Yes, realize there is probably a simple answer but I just can't figure it out.

When I used them, which is around 50 years ago, we tied a double surgeons loop at the end and used a small snap swivel on the main line. Obviously it could be done in reverse; put a snap on the wedding band line. Back then Wedding Bands were sold on a card and the line was about 8 to 10 inches. I remember I restrung them as necessary. Just drop all the components in a bowl, tie a hook to a length of line with a snell or bait loop and add the beads and band in order.

Last year they were really popular on the Fraser during the pink run. Back 40 to 50 years ago I used them for coho. I plan to make some of my own. The jeweled bands are available at Michaels though those translucent beads in a variety of diameters aren't easy to find now so I am will try a couple of trout beads.

With wedding bands or any lure that you have pre-rigged on a leader (apex or whatever) you should occasionally cut the leader and retie anyway. That mono gets stretched out, dried out, etc. Just not a good idea to reuse it forever. It's just going to snap one day on a hard strike or with a big fish on. So ya cut the line and dump the beads in a bowl or whatever. If you have any doubt how they go back on take a few pictures beforehand. Personally when I tie on a new leader I tie it to the length I want to fish it at, say 18 inches. Then I tie a barrel swivel on the end. Then I'll thread that onto the split ring on the end of my dodger or whatever. If a barrel swivel wont work for you gear then tie on a snap swivel, or duo-lock, whatever, pick a swivel type. You definitely do not want to be cutting and retying the wedding band. If you insist on fishing it right out of the package with the loop at the end of the leader I would personally run the required extra length you need off your dodger then connect that leader to the wedding band with a duo-lock swivel. You could do a loop to loop connection too but IMO that system does not work so well with thinner diameter mono (could bite/cut into each other). With welded loops and thicker mono the loop to loop system works fine.

another way to deal with those problems is to takes the beads, blade and wedding band off the mono and put it on a spinner harness. Seems simple unless there is some special action from putting them on mono. The clevis is bound to wear the mono over time.

Sorry for delay and thanks for the replies. I didn't think about the need to retie but that makes sense. I thought I was overthinking it and turns out I wasn't thinking it through enough. Thanks again.
