How recommended is it to have a basket for your line vs letting it float all over the water

Very, unless you can manage loops in you hand.
The tide and/or current will carry your line a long ways.

I'm not fly fishing but from 20+ trips to ambleside during the last 2 years, I've seen a lot of the fly fishermen (more than half of them) using the basket, guess it's recommended...

Yes they are a generally a good idea. However I have one but seldom use it. For me using one is 50/50. It's another bit of kit to haul around, put on and take off. It restricts how deep you can wade. They prevent line tangles but don't eliminate them.  There are aslo potential safety issues with them. If you fall in the water wearing it getting out may be more difficult or even dangerous depending on the circumstances. I think they are relatively expensive too.

It's easy to make one out of easy to obtain materials. I did one myself for like $10 and it worked better than the commercial one that cost me close to 8x more. Of course I got rid of it when I bought one.

Here's an example: https://newenglandonthefly.com/2014/06/16/diy-stripping-basket-fly-fishing-essential/.

You can google DIY stripping basket for more examples.

I use an Ikea footstool with holes drilled out and zap straps epoxied in to prevent tangling
