Besides the obvious advantages of comfort and profile for an auto inflate hydrostatic PFD is the downside of initial cost and maintenance costs.

The Mustang hydrostatic PFDs are only guaranteed for 5 yrs. After that time you may need to replace the cartridge and inflator. Or if it does inflate, you need to buy and install a re-arm kit.

It's a balancing act between reliability, comfort and cost.

A few thoughts on the auto-inflate PFDs....

They come in different buoyancy ratings. Unless you are a very small individual, get yourself one with the highest buoyancy rating.

The cheaper ones only have the rip cord to inflate. That doesn't do you much good if you fall and crack your head before you hit the water! Spend the extra $ and get on that has the auto inflate if the vest hits water. The only down side of these is they can accidently be activated if they are dropped in the water.

Also I'd get one that has the window by the CO2 canister so you can see the green bar if it is armed/pressurized or red if the system has somehow lost its pressure. Good to know before you put it on that the vest will work if you fall overboard.

A coworker of mine lost her brother last year to a drowning. Guy was fishing by himself in a lake, somehow fell out of his boat, no PFD, boat kept going, he drowned. I'm always surprised on the rivers and lakes, I'd say 3/4s of adults I see are not wearing a PFD. Kind of like driving around not wearing your seatbelt IMO.

TRANSPORT CANADA’S PROPOSAL FOR MANDATORY FLOTATION DEVISES FOR RECREATIONAL BOATERS

Transport Canada is consulting on a proposal to make personal flotation devices (PFDs)/lifejackets mandatory for recreational boaters. Preliminary consultations done by Transport Canada however were limited to safety groups, enforcement partners, and industry, and did not include angling and hunting organizations. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters has developed a survey to gather information directly from anglers and hunters who use a boat and has asked that Federations across Canada share this survey with our members. Your participation will ensure that our collective voice is part of the conversation as Transport Canada considers these changes. Updated 2024/09/09

This has been underway for some years. Both the links provided are dead.

I was told by RCMP at cultus lake that as long as you have it on board you are good.

link updated. If you have an inflatable vest like the Mustangs you will be ticketed if you are not wearing it.

Yes and it's been discussed here before. The RCMP may cut people slack or people who had it on board but not on their person may have had the infraction dismissed in court.
