See? Not over yet. ;D

Not a bad outing today. I crawled out of bed and into the truck, ended up at the river at 10am. ;D First hour was a little challenging, but from 11am to 1:30pm or so, I ended up hooking 10. 2 were the above hatchery fish. 7 were wild and they were probably the brightest fish I've had so far this season. The tenth fish was lost because the hook came off the spoon. I guess it thought I caught too many and gave up.  :D Water clarity was just right, hopefully the rain this weekend doesn't degrade it too much.

Did not fish but looked at the river and even with the rain yesterday the river remained in good shape, the low snow level helped stem the possible rise in the water levels and affect the clarity of the water.

A good number of anglers still catching chum salmon. Some are trying to find Rodney's spot where the few coho salmon are.lol

Well, I’m not a biologist, but I’ll take a stab at it.

I suspect it’s because all 8 fish weren’t reared in a hatchery and weren’t adipose clipped.

Last 4 trips I landed 62 coho on another system, (lost and missed lots)  and only 6 of the 62 were hatchery.  Last year on the same river it was the other way around.  Seems the Vedder is not the only river with an abundance of wild coho this year.  Talked with the survey guy at Dewdney boat launch and he said 95% of the coho there are hatchery this year.  Seems very odd to me.

that's a lot of dam coho you've caught. That doesn't make sense to me either how can it fluctuate from 10% wild to 90% within one year..

There is just lots of coho salmon spawning now in the main stem of the Chilliwack Vedder River and all the new spawning and rearing channels that have been built over the last few years.

This is now paying off with a good number wild fish returning. I know I have caught enough hatchery fish to satisfy our needs to enjoy fresh baked salmon and put a few away for the coming months.

How many fish do we really need anyway? Of course with the coho salmon season coming to an end it is time to get some rest and gear up for the coming steelhead season.
