Coho with a stamp on gill plate
« on: November 14, 2024, 12:45:03 PM »

A friend of mine caught a coho this morning with a stamp on the gill plate.
Does anyone know what it means?

isn't that a $100k fish....? ;D

That's a hole punch which has healed back, from some data collection project.

Very interesting. It certainly could be a lamprey bite mark. With the gill plate being so hard, the lamprey couldn't do any damage and it moved on.

I can't think of a more feasible explanation. Thanks Sockeyed.

Lovely colours on that fish!

Maybe it’s a Canada Post commemorative stamp?🤔

what's that ugly jumble of green, black and red crap in its mouth? Looks like a trio of spinners

I had no idea what a lamprey bite looked like before this post but the smiley face on the picture is the giveaway.

What a creepy, vile, nasty creature.  Oddly I'd like to try eating one.

It's a fly designed by my buddy. Sort of a"Christmas Tree Egg Sucking Leech" hybrid.

Coho really dig them when properly retrieved in frog water.
