Fraser Aug 28th
« on: August 29, 2004, 09:29:09 AM »

Gman and I fished the Fraser in the Rosedale Aggasiz area yesterday. We chucked out the heavy lead and green doctors to see if we could persuade a spring to bite.

After about an hour, just when we had been lulled into calmness I hear the bell and Gman yells "You gota fish". My back was turned to the rod holder at the time, and I didn't see the strike, but from Gman's excitement I knew it was solid strike. I did the 10' dash to the rod holder, set the hook, continued reeling and felt nothing. Then I felt the line tighen up and assumed my weight was snagging. The rod tip had a sharp bend when all of a sudden I felt the head shaking of a spring and realized the fish was still there ;D. The spring had been swimming in the whole time until it finally realized it was hooked. After a brief but exciting fight a nice red spring was beached.

We continued to fish but as the showers started turning to rain we decided to pack it in. We already had all the gear packed, except the rods of course, when Gmans bell goes off.  He goes to set the hook but this time the fish is no longer there. We decide to fish a little longer, just in case a fresh school is moving thru, but have no further luck.

The spring was the first one for myself caught on the bar rod. ;D

When I saw the strike I was jabbering "fish, fish, fish, spring, spring, spring" so fast I don't think you ever did hear what i was trying to say but figured it out from my expression and pointing at the rod. ;D

Too bad the monsoons drenched us and cut short our try for a second one. It was nice to get one anyway. We were not too optimistic when we first got to our spot because with the lower water the current was fairly slow and we wondered if the springs would be there. At least one was. :)

MeAtWork, Doctor = SpinNGlow.

Cnm it was the same size as I was using last weekend, if you recall. I'm not too good with my size numbers yet.

Just a quick question, how far do you usually have to cast out for these guys?

Clouser,

I often wonder the same thing. Obviously it depends on the location.

In general I tend to chuck it as far as I can in most situations. In this case FishOn didn't cast too far as he was casting with a centerpin. I cast mine pretty far out. I got a bite, FishOn got a fish.

In some cases surfacing fish can also give clues as to where to cast.

Dont ignore closer in.  As gman says location means a lot but fish try to follow the path of least resistance so if there is enough water closer in (depth may depend on clarity, water speed) they will be there.  Areas where water velocity is fast they will likely be in closer if it is deep enough 15-30 ft out while areas where it is slower and the water depth is gradual they may be just past the ledge that forms in many areas in the Fraser.

Lots of speculation but we comfort ourselves by looking at where the water flows from above, infront of and below where we are fishing and add in water colour, speed and depth.  Im pretty confident in not wanting to fish a bar that shallows out at the bottom part too much.  I think the fish are pushed out by the shallow water below and do not move back into casting range until the very top part of the bar at the soonest.

Areas where the river narrows is often good as the fish will be concentrated and closer in.

Learning to cast 18 oz when I was younger meant not too far of casts.  I remember a few days where I hit a fish when no one else did or they were not getting lots and they were casting out further.  Nothing big though, so maybe the big boys are out there further regardless.

Very nice fish and to get it bar fishing to boot. ;D ;D

Wants to make me get out there but the Senior games
and hopefully a gold medal will come my way and then is the protest in Kelowna so will have to wait a week to get back to the bar.

Be aware the slide on the Chilcotin will be making the Fraser pretty dirty and a bit unsafe the next while so the bar fishing will be poor.

When it clears we find a #2 half and half (orange and yellow) Spin an glow works very well for Fall fish on the Fraser.

Leave the good Doctor for next year's Springs. ;D

We may have been a bit lucky as it seems it was slower today. Another friend went bar fishing to the same spot today and did not get a bite in about 5 hours of trying. There were several other fishermen also there and they also did not have any luck.

The only ones that caught anything were a pair using spin'n'glo and roe combinations that were targeting spring jacks and had caught a couple.

Sounds like adding a bit of roe might be a good idea this time of year.

Yes best to use some roe with the glow now as the Jacksons seem to really go for it over just  a bare glow.

Remember to use the half and half a proven glow for the Fall fishery. ;D
