Kelowna Protest Sept 7th
« on: September 07, 2004, 07:16:44 PM »

30 of us headed up yo Kelowna this morning to protest the DFO's unwillingness to acknowledge the illegal fisheries taking place on the Fraser River. Some positive steps were made today as Bill O. met with the federal fisheries minister Geoff Regan, as we protested outside the hotel. A special thanks to Canoeman, Leadbelly, Buckeye, Frank Kw, and former FWR members Otto and Dynamite Kid for taking time off their busy schedules to show support for this issue and attend, and most importantly, to show support for something a great deal of people take for granted, our privilege to fish.

Poor coverage on the tube but it sounds like a dialouge has been started, good work to all who showed up.

a big thanks to all who attended, the largest positve thing was the fact that Geoff Regan has agreed to a meeting with all those concerned
and that includes guide associations, bc drift fishers my friend, sport fishers defence alliance, bc wildlife fed, commercial interests, and lets hope first nations are present.

this is to take place on sept 20th location yet to be determined.
this is to be a peacefull meeting to put our concerns on the table, so keeping up the email barage might not be a bad idea. weve got to keep them on there toes but in a peacefull way for now.

Joining such an organiseation as the Sport Fishing Defence Alliance is probably a good idea right now as they need our support both finnancially and physically more numbers the louder your voice.
imagine if we had 300 people there today, then global tv might not of bumped our story over 300 bikers who got displaced  :o from there hotel convention space
" no dissin bikers as i have owned my fair share of rides" even done coast to coast on one of them  8)

the second coolest thing was learning so much from the people who we traveled with in our mini van, jackie, john-oops sorry lol, gwyn, and george

Thanks to all that attended today, sorry I could not go as my dad took a turn for the worse while I was fishing jack springs yesterday after the Penticton Senior Games. I had to return home early yesterday morning and am with him in Langley now.

Did the protest make any of the local TV news channels?

We believe it did Chris.
The local camera crew never left us while we were there, they did a lot better than the national guys. :o

A big thanx to you too Doc SG, sure is great to see people come out and support events like this. Most people just don't take that extra step that needs to be taken to make a difference.  :(

Proud of the guys that showed up, including otto and Dynamite Kid.

You guys rule!!

 :D

Good job! Nice photos Canoeman and Buckeye. Nice to know a meeting is finally arranged. It's unfortunate that one has to go to the extreme to get all parties onto the negotiating table.

Chris, our thoughts are with you tonight, hope all is well.

Check out the Vancouver Sun.  One small pic on page 3.  The caption mentions what the protest was but, saddly, no mention in the paper.  Maybe a few letters to the editor about the lack of coverage may help.

Congrats to all that were able to go.  My appologies for not making the trip, but my work shedule would not allow it.
