Ok... So it's not as big as Gooey's... Only at 34in and 30in....
The first fall trip to the Vedder is always exciting. The unknowns can make you very anxious. The river is completely changed since the freshet, new runs and pools need to be located. It's a whole new game.
The expectation was not big, in fact I did not expect to catch anything today. The goal today was more to scout out where I will be fishing this fall, the fish would simply be a bonus.
A late start I had, around 2pm. While getting ready after I arrived, one angler was on his way out. He mentioned that he did not see or touch a single fish since 9am. Those words were somewhat discouraging, but not to worry as I was there to fish for spots.
After 30 minutes of walking around, I finally found one section that I thought would be productive. A browse on the river bank saw numerous fresh blood stain, someone must have killed a couple of fish this morning.
What was more exciting was the fact that I did not see a single angler on that 400m stretch of the river. The atmosphere was a lot more relaxing, there was no hurry to catch a fish.
Today's bait was last year's procured chum roe. The cure colour was double hot red, but was only partially coloured so it retained some of its natural orange colour. A size 2 Drennan float was rigged up above the bait. If I had a size 1 (smaller) Drennan, I would be using that instead as the drift was rather slow.
20 minutes went by since I started drifting, but a few rolls and rises kept me confident. Soon after itosh phoned and asked where I was fishing, I landed a small jack that was very acrobatic.
How exciting! The day was good enough with that fish. Ten minutes later, as Itosh started walking towards be from downstream, I hooked another fish. This fish tapped the float three times like a small trout. Originally I almost neglected the bites but set the hook anyway. The tip of Stryker 2106 immediately pointed down at the water, indicating that was no trout or jack. The timing was perfect, I landed the fish just as itosh arrived.
The rest of the afternoon was rather quiet, a few hits and misses. We left soon after the rain started to get heavy.
Good luck to those who are heading out this weekend.
