I like chum. So i heard the Stave was fun for that - but I have never been there.

I looked on a map and there seems to be a bridge  -  is that a worthwhile place?

2) what other spots are worthwhile - is it a walkable river like the vedder?
3) Is drifting a good method, red wool?

There is a little park on the east side of the damn.  Start there or down by the Hwy bridge.

Both are good spots.  There are also spots between the bridge and the park along the road.  Word of caution:  it's a zoo there.  Lots of people and you will see lots of snagging of fish.  If you drift wool, make sure you keep your presentation about a foot of the bottom.  It will definitely reduce the number of snagged fish.  Also, a colorado tied below your float is also very effective.  Again, make sure you keep your presentation off the bottom by a good foot to minimize snagging.  Look for deeper troughs to fish through otherwise you will snag fish.  During the peak, there are so many chum that they are literally packed one atop of the other in many spots which is why it's really a good idea to stay away from the shallower water where you can see the fish lying.

thanks - btw, is it a pretty river? you know, like squish is nice, vedder has some nice scenic  spots -- is the stave that way?

I would say the Stave is the least scenic when compared to the Squamish or Vedder, unless you idea of scenic is heavy industry.

I wouldn't say it's scenic...top end you have the dam and crowds, bottom end has the highway and mill. Mid river is not too bad I guess, but don't expect solitude or much of a peaceful, one with nature fishing experience.

You can always bring a stepladder to assure a good spot !!!

Do you have a boat, canoe?? When I go I like to avoid the crowds by paddling across to the islands. You can go out to towards the confluence and toss spoons or flies for them. These guys are pretty agressive!!

I find chum is ok if you smoke it.

A canoe would be a huge aid in finding a good spot away from the crows

absolutely canoe or brandywine flyer needed to get away from the crowds 
it can be a scenic river at times like when the sun is coming up through the fog and your down the east side
its a great river for kids to learn on and get them hooked on fishin
personally i love the stave because there is all kinds of water in such a short distance
from rapids to deep channels to calm back water pools, but it also very close to civilization and therefore pays the price
but its also 20 min from my house so i cant complain
