sturgeon.... April 24th
« on: April 25, 2005, 08:03:16 AM »

Well we are finally got our boat problems under control ;D...so it is back to sturgeon fishing!!..was out yesterday and couldn't believe the nimber of guide boats out...We had to work for our fish but ended up with four around the 4ft mark...cut the day early as we got an offer on our house (maybe the jet baot will arrive sooner!!!)...one thing that amazes me is the shape these fish are in...they are fat and sassy...over the last couple of weeks the fish have increased in numbers (and size) in the different holes...the bait of choice was oolie....

anyone had any luck finding oolies or ditch eels (or lamprey) for sale ???...I haven't found any anywhere.... :'(

Thanks

Mike

I will have to get some pictures to Rod for him to post...After our first trip (guided is the only way to go the first time) we were totally hooked on this sport and try to get out every weekend after these monsters!...The nice this is our boat is pretty ugly (but the best platform for sturgeon fishing we have seen yet) and are we being recognized by alot of the guides etc. alot stopping buy and saying hi and swapping reports...It sure is nice to have the boat back up and running....now all we have to do is work our way through the list of people wanting to go out ;D

Iv never ever targeted stergeon, but It sounds interesting. Iv heard there numbers are low, am i right? So is it alot like steelhead fishing where it takes a good couple of trips before you hook into one?

A question for the experts ;), i've only ever used dew worms for stergeon, is it a good bait or are others better?  Does stergeon fishing require a sensitive set-up?

Dew worms are good for sturgeon. Put several of them on your hook. More the better.

Bigfisher, sturgeon numbers aren't what I would call low...It is a matter of finding a nice hole or even just a couple of foot depression in the river bottom will hold sturgeon...We have only been skunked once or twice and that was around Christmas to early January when the sturgeon are usually quite dormant...As far as bait goes whatever is running in the River during the time you are fishing is the best bait, ie now with the oolies running this is the best bait by far...a good year round staple we have found is ditch eels, the sturgeon love them!...As far as rod and reel, the rod needs t ohave a good backbone with fairly sensitive tip and for a reel we use the Penn 320GT with braided 80 plus line...If ypou are shore fishing a good hint is fish below the salmon fisherman (if they are catching anything!) as the sturgeon will pile up there waiting for the morsels to float down to them...You hear quite abit of guys fishing the tail end of some run and hooking into sturgeons, this isn't a fluke its that the fish know a food source is close by...

Hope this helps and if you have anymore questions I will try to answer them
