Bigfisher, sturgeon numbers aren't what I would call low...It is a matter of finding a nice hole or even just a couple of foot depression in the river bottom will hold sturgeon...We have only been skunked once or twice and that was around Christmas to early January when the sturgeon are usually quite dormant...As far as bait goes whatever is running in the River during the time you are fishing is the best bait, ie now with the oolies running this is the best bait by far...a good year round staple we have found is ditch eels, the sturgeon love them!...As far as rod and reel, the rod needs t ohave a good backbone with fairly sensitive tip and for a reel we use the Penn 320GT with braided 80 plus line...If ypou are shore fishing a good hint is fish below the salmon fisherman (if they are catching anything!) as the sturgeon will pile up there waiting for the morsels to float down to them...You hear quite abit of guys fishing the tail end of some run and hooking into sturgeons, this isn't a fluke its that the fish know a food source is close by...
Hope this helps and if you have anymore questions I will try to answer them
