Rice lake 5/29 No Sakana ? (note: Sakana=Fish)
« on: May 29, 2005, 01:15:41 AM »

i just fished two days in a role at rice lake.
yesterday morning starting from 4:30 am and today after work from 5 pm
yesterday i saw a considerably big rainbow leaping out of the water.
it leaped twice just a yay ahead of where i fished, and i'm sure that some fishing line is attached to the trout's lower jaw. very fascinating.
i started doing my fly fishing a bit later, understanding that i'm quite bad at my fly casting. i attempted couple monster casts until i reached my new record. (maybe 5 metres) sadly.
i switched over to a float/ split shots/ dews afterwards.
it didn't work at all for the next 2 hours.
there after i switched to a pink/silver spinner, and i literally saw the trout follow my spinner to where i fished for a couple times. Somehow it didn't take the spinner at all.
Today, i used dew worms again with floats. After fishing for an hour, i saw a quick pull  on float. Just as i was about to say "Fish On" the darn float popped right back up the surface. the same thing happened half an hour later. (well, at least i know my set-up works now)
well. one thing i found out during my experience is that the spinning rod outfit is considerably hard for quick response since i'm letting my line to slack out for quick some distance. and when the float is dipping, it actually becomes too late for me to set the line since i have to real in the Extra line that is dragging on top of the water.
Q> is PowerBait(Trout) "the ONE" bait i should use ?

PS. as the Fish Assassin will alway say, :"This is fishing, not catching."
I am glad i had some great fishing experience.

hope you'll catch something buddy :P
if i don't have to work 24/7, i'd head up to the lake too.
by the ways, i also noticed lots of fish surfacing around the northern part of the lake, so keep that in mind.
maybe fly fishing is the key.  :o
good luck

Dew worm or shrimp work just as good as PowerBait. Tightening that line is really important as they are fast and you need to be on it when that float goes down. Downsizing your float or hook maybe another option to increase success.

Hey, don't blame your inability to reel one in on me. ;D

Pretty reliable source, as it is coming directly from the people who are doing the stocking. Sakana Tsuri did mention that there were many fish surfacing at the north end. I've never done that well on a hot day like this at Rice Lake, unless it's late evening.

Was it that kid who couldn't even cast properly?!?!? I was right beside him all morning....

I'm not going to that lake anymore, been there 6 times this year and not a single bite. I'm gonna try and go to Murrin next weekend as my friends dad caught 4 12" there yesterday.

Murrin had more fish stocked in it than other lakes in April. Go early, hard to find a parking spot as there are other user groups in that area on weekends.

well., sounds like another slow day for some fishing friends.
that's why this topic is called " no-sakana" (no fish) in japanese
 ;D
i'm going for another attempt after school tomorrow.
this time i'm heading to the northern end. (not near the dock anymore)
wait for my good news guys. :P

I was the kid standing on the rocks in near the middle of the lake on the west side. There was a little boy with his dad right beside me. I was only there from 7 to 11 am.

If I did go back to Rice lake I wouldn't fish from that dock. Its always packed with tourists and little kids running around. in the middle of the lake on the east side there a couple of good spots that I always see fish jumping near. There is a shallow area and then a drop off with some nice rocks you can leap around on to get further out to cast. Lots of garbage there too.

Does Murrin allow any kinda boats?

well, i attempted today again (31/05) after class
i used dew worms which ends up giving my 4 different bites within 2 hours.
somehow my float tends to dip everytime i'm doing something else. (etc. making another setup)
my reflex speed + miles of slack line created by my spinning reel really gave me a tough time.
i made 2 empty strikes when the float dipped. well, i guess i should've reeled in a bunch of slack line before i raise my rod.
tough luck today, i'll just give it another try this saturday.  ::)

After cast hold your rod tip down, reel in as much line as possible to tighten the line the give it a little yank the line will sink underwater.
This way even if you have some slack when you set the hook, you won't notice it. ;)

sounds nice, thanks bwi
i actually have a burnin desire to catch a fish from rice lake,
cause i've seen a rather large trout leaping(from my previous post), so i know the big fishies are there.
" never give up, never surrender "
well, maybe i'll go for my 5th visit this week on the coming saturday, the trouts are getting hooked for sure this time  :P
