Was a pretty cool idea, some really great musical acts.  Although I feel that the whole idea of not raising money was crazy, sure public awareness is a good thing, but most people know that there are  starving people in the world. In the end maybe the public awareness will force governments to make changes, but that will not be a very fast fix, many people will have starved to death before any thing will change. But if every person that attended the show donated a few bucks, they could of raised awareness as well as millions and millions of dollars. Sure lots of money will not put and end to world hunger, but it sure would of fed alot of mouths.

Musical highs for me were Paul McCartney, thought he sounded great after so many years.  Pink Floyd, great to see Roger Waters back with the band thought they sounded amazing. As far as the Canadian show I loved seeing Gordon Lightfoot perform, Blue Rodeo were good, Barenaked Ladies were great as well.

Lows of the concert were some rap band called DMC and a few members of Aerosmith doing the song walk this way, sounded terrible. Also once a favorite band of mine, still have all there cds, seen them in concert a few times, the Tragicly Hip, dont know what Gord Downey is on, but he has lost it!, he ruins some really good songs with the style of singing he uses now, all he does is scream and yell. Dont think Id go to another Hip show unless they get a new lead singer. The last on my list of disapointments is Motley Crue, another band I saw and loved when I was younger.  Vince Neil the singer has gotten way too fat, and has totally lost his singing voice, I think bands like that should stay broken up.

Not to seem argumentative Nina

... but explain how this is going to be a good cause. ::)

The G8 will meet ....review all the awareness that all these rather well-to-do entertainers have created, then implement total debt relief to Africa ... heck lets go on to say ALL third world countries. THEN WHAT?  ???

Children will still starve, capitalists will still rule and we will watch as debt will again increase. :-[

Good point Bantam. Let's assume as a result of this concert all the G8 countries wipe out all the debts owed by 3rd world countries. As long as they still have the corrupt government in power, nothing will be solved. My .02

Why is it a good cause? The answers are explained in this section. Reduction/void of debt is simply one of many actions that this process is trying to push. By bringing the gap closer between the riches and the poors closer together, it will eventually result in better global environment, which benefit everyone since we all live on the same planet.

To the more educated sector of the western world, not knowing what poverty is seems to be unheard of. But, many, especially youth who are so caught up with the circus media loves to create these days, are not as well informed. Live 8 concerts reconnect the youth and these social issues by using something that they interest in, music. If we don't regenerate new interests to fight, is there still hope?

We emphasize so much on achieving sustainability on our land, but what about their land? The two worlds are connected by air and water, which we share everyday. Their environmental problems, will eventually become our problems. The process may not be perfect, but it's better than lacking a process. Donations would only solve short term problems, feed a few stomachs for a month. What's needed is to pressure leaders to take action so plans to create sustainable living are developed to help others that are in need.

Rod , lets elaborate ... lets say the G8 do what Live8 intended in Edinburgh.

What then? How long will it take? Will support that was started by Live8 continue on strong or fizzle out? Remember we're dealing with mankind.

The idealism is great, but how is mankind going to seriously get past that?  Don't you feel there are more serious political and world economical issues that need a much attention as Africa's plight. War in the Middle East for one. Who will pick up the ball to gardner the huge wave of support that is going to be required. I don't mean to be pessimistic .... but I believe there's alot more involved here than one can be made aware through a free concert.

I don’t know how this concert is gonna help ending poverty. How would I know? That all depends on what the world leaders decide at the meeting. I hope they decide to cancel the debts and decide on fair trade but obviously that is not gonna solve the problem, I don’t think anyone in their right mind thinks that. Helping Africa is gonna take several generations, a lot of work and a lot of money, but I hope that this meeting will kick start it all.

Actually, I do not feel that there are much more important things than ending poverty. Of course there are other important things as well, the Middle East as you mentioned, but that part of the world is getting quite a bit of attention, don’t you think?

Honestly, you do sound very pessimistic and I can understand that. I am myself not an optimist by nature but the way I look at it is this;     poor hungry people ---> frustration ----> terrorists

So, simply put, the reason I care is because I deeply believe that the instability in the world (gap between rich and poor) is going to be the western worlds undoing. Putting it like that it is suddenly not about other peoples misfortune far away, but about your own safety, future and way of life. If people looked at it like that maybe they would care more.

The big problem is that no matter how much we help the poor nations, some despot will skim 99% of any money before their citizens even see the money.  (cf. Iraq - both pre and post US invasion  ::) )
