As expected, here's the notice.
FN0572-Squamish River, Cheakamus River and Mamquam River - Angling Closures http://www-ops2.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/xnet/content/fns/index.cfm?pg=view_notice&lang=en&DOC_ID=81783&ID=recreationalOn August 5 a major chemical spill of caustic soda occurred on the Cheakamus
River. This spill has resulted in major fish kills for all species and all age
classes on the river.
Pink and chinook salmon have been returning to this system for the last several
weeks. It is assumed that the chemical spill destroyed a large portion of
these spawning fish and may have destroyed their eggs. Coho fry in the system
were also affected.
To address the conservation concern for the 2005 pink and chinook returns the
following angling closures will be implemented:
Effective August 15, 2005 at 00:01 hours until September 30, 2005, you may not
angle on the Cheakamus River and its tributaries, the Mamquam River or that
portion of the Squamish River downstream from the confluence with the Cheakamus
River.
This decision will be re-evaluated in mid-September.
