My son caught a nice trout looking fish in St Mary's Lake on Saltspring last week. Only got a quick look before letting it go. Nice and silver but spotty back. Very fat for a 15" trout. Could it have been a salmon?

I've heard reports that there are some coho in the lake that stay there all their lives.  Fisheries did in the past stock the lake with steelhead so you may have caught one of those, but indeed it may have been a landlocked salmon.  There is access to the sea through Duck Creek and salmon do ascend it in the fall to spawn in the very small tribs that feed the lake.  Maybe one decided to stick around.

I thought the trout in that lake were rainbow.  I think there is a picture of FishingChick's father with one he caught in the fishing report section on the St. Mary's Lake trip some of us made this past June.  There was one fair sized trout (of some kind) hanging around the beach at the Lakeside Gardens, but he wasn't interested in anything I threw at him.  And the bass were so easy, I didn't give him much of a try.  I fished quite a bit with things that a trout might hit while I was there, but I don't think I ever had a trout on.

The bigger Trout I've seen come out of that lake-5 & 6 pound bruisers-were very silver and looked something like a Coho until you checked the details.
