No dice on the Fraser fishery this year...
« on: August 25, 2005, 02:56:23 PM »

The Fraser Panel met on August 24, 2005 to receive an update on the progress of
the return of Fraser sockeye and pink salmon.  As indicated in FN0613 issued
August 24, 2005, the Fraser Panel adopted an Early Summer run size of 400,000
and a Summer Run size of 5.0M.  The Department has completed an assessment of
the impact of fisheries on Late run Fraser sockeye.  In planning for Fraser
salmon fisheries, the Department established a 15 percent harvest rate ceiling
on Late run Fraser sockeye.  Based on the status of Late run expressed by the
Pacific Salmon Commission, it is the view of the Department that the return of
Late run Fraser sockeye (excluding Birkenhead) is unlikely to exceed 241,000.
It is also anticipated that the Late run objective has been accounted for in
Late run sockeye already harvested in test and First Nation fisheries and in
fisheries to address outstanding requirements.  Accordingly there is no
remaining available harvest of Late run sockeye to support recreational and
commercial fisheries.

The Panel will meet at 11:00 Friday August 26, 2005 to update the status.
Arrangements to conclude First Nation and recreational fisheries that are
currently ongoing will be announced following that meeting.  Next announcement
will be afternoon, Friday August 26, 2005.

I am glad they closed it but I wish they had the enough guts to do something about the FN. If they didnt allow the FN to get away with so much future generations would alctually still see a good run on the Fraser.

Before people trample all over DFO, consider who provides their budget.

This is likely also the first season of many to come where recreational fisherman will be unable to fish for sockeye.
Whats next no sturgeon fishing?

This annoucement is one of he biggest cowardly lies I have ever heard from a reputation-bankrupt DFO.  They must have this scripted politically long ago, and play it out as if they are following exact science.  Sockeyes are every where in the bar, and they say no to sporties. It is time to take up arms brothers.  Where is the place for a show of force by those committed to sockeye fishery?  Sporties, tackle stores, communites, and all.

The natives can go out and rape over 400,000 fish and the commericals and rec's don't get ONE damn fish!!! This from a government that talks about equality and equal rights for all groups! What type of hell hole of a country are we living in where racism is so potent and the government does nothing about it! Definetly time for a protest fishery!

Well, if they closed the pinks that would be kind of weird considering that they just opened pink retention on the Fraser at about the same time as the latest sockeye notice.  Then again - you never know! :P

OH the wailing and sobbing. Poor me , poor me.  :'( :'( :'(

Good to see the continued ME mentality is alive and well on FWR.

This thread should have been titled 'Whining' .... but I told you so  ::) ..... Be thankful DFO let you have a few pinks.

I think I'll take my 6 weight and go play with some pinks with my Cheam brethren.  ;D ;D

my god bantam.... you are a real prize
you trash on all the folks on this forum and then you say you are going out to catch pinks on your 6 wt.
In the FRASER? man you are a steward of the resource, a real conservation minded fellow i'm sure.
I hope you are killing your 4 and going home after that. Most seasoned, conservation and ethically minded individuals would not put the stress of catching and releasing pinks on a 6wt in fraser waters.
probably just one of your dumb my friend trolls though...
so... go crawl back under your rock, we aren't concerned with your i told you so babble
