Campbell River over the weekend
« on: August 30, 2005, 12:35:22 PM »

I was in Campbell River over the weekend and went out for some guided salt water fishing.

Fishing was pretty good. There were lots of pink and sockeye around. They were splashing all over the place. If you were targeting them you could pretty much put the lines down and get a bite within a few minutes. It was usually a pink with the occasional sockeye mixed in. We targetted springs, but even on the spring gear (anchovies and hootchies fished deeper) the pink bites were plentifull. Also got some sockeye on both anchovies and hootchies while targeting springs. We did manage a couple of springs about 15 pounds and a big hard fighting chum. Throw in a released wild coho and Gwoman caught all 5 species of salmon in one day (first time our guide had done this on one rod).

Ther was lots of grumbling from the guides about them shutting down the sockeye fishing just as the main run was arriving including come comments about "filleting and releasing".

I expect most of those fish are on the way to the Fraser and will be here in increasing numbers soon.  Lots of fish on the way down! :)

a good report.

Let's not kid ourselves here, if DFO says we shouldn't be killing fish, then it is best that way as we can keep the Indians off the river. If we can't have fish, then they can't either.

Nice report.... I hope you two left some for me to intercept down here today. ;) Did gkids go as well? A few friends of mine were asking about Campbell River fishing last Friday as they wanted to charter a boat on Sunday. They probably did just as good.

Secondly, is there a need to turn every single thread into a FN/DFO bashing thread? :-\ ::) I am watching the forum slowly degenerating by such strong political voices, sometimes a bit over the line.

No the kids stayed at home making it a nice getaway for us.   :)

The only problem was Gwoman outfishing me.  ::) She got both springs and the chum, leaving me with lots of pinks, and some released sockeye. I did get the pleasure of fighting a nice wild coho hooked on a light rod with a simple spoon. It was there as a fun way to hook some pinks but ended up with a big coho putting up a nice battle.

As I recall Gkid also outfished Gman during a pink salmon outing 2 years ago ;D In fact she outfished FishOn as well :'( Maybe the two of us should head out together. At least the competition will be fair.
